Jennings Around the World is a graphic nonfiction book so it reads like a novel of three biographies. Each of the three historical individuals traveled around the world post-Verne. Thomas Stevens bicycled around the world with an early prototype of the bicycle, the kind with one large wheel and one small. (Lots of falling.) Famous for being a daring female reporter, Nellie Bly tried traveled to beat Jules Verne’s record. Finally, Joshua Slocum sailed around the world in his old sailboat. A graphic novel is a fantastic way to read about history – this book really captured me.

Genie loved all fish, especially sharks, and wanted to be a fish scientist. Even though she lived in the 1930s when that wasn’t a regular job for a woman, Genie found work — first as an assistant, then as a researcher for the US Navy, and finally, she opened up her own marine laboratory. She focused her research on sharks, discovering more about sharks than anyone knew before. Reading this picture book biography inspired me and sparked my interest in learning more about sharks. I’m excited to share this fantastic nonfiction book with you! With colorful graphic design, excellent informative writing, large text size, photographs, and illustrations, you’ll learn all about the shoes we call sneakers, starting with the history and continuing to the present. The book concludes with thoughts of the future sneakers, too. Excellent. Zippy pacing with dialogue from first-person accounts, character arcs, and a true story arc makes this nonfiction book read like a narrative story. It’s well organized and meticulously researched about what happened in the Philippines during World War II. When the Phillippines fell to the Japanese, the US and Philippine soldiers and citizens were taken into horrific Prisoner of War camps. Notably, this book shares the contributions of women, including their underground resistance, which many books ignore. Note: This is about the violence of war and includes soldier language (damn, bastards), but it’s not detailed or salacious and is appropriate for middle-grade readers who aren’t bothered by either. I love books about weird, and I suspect so do your kids. Learn all about the strangest sports in the world. Underwater bike racing? I only applied to basket weaving. Fun! Girls Think of Everything Stories of Ingenious Inventions by Women by Catherine Thimmesh, illustrated by Melissa Sweet Thus, every dead body is likely have a unique microbiological signature, and this signature may change with time according to the exacting conditions of the death scene. A better understanding of the composition of these bacterial communities, the relationships between them, and how they influence each other as decomposition proceeds, could one day help forensics teams learn more about where, when and how a person died.
