About this deal

He came to see me after the procedure and I wiggled my hand in his face, proudly. “No painkillers,” I said, grinning, “and no pain either.” Are there important differences? This suggests that you are not bringing the whole of you to one part of your life. This is especially true if your colleagues see a very different ‘you’ to the one seen by your friends and family. Prevention of substance abuse is a key target under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on Health. ‘Super Skills’ aims to support social and emotional skill development as a foundation for substance use prevention for children and youth, especially in marginalized communities. For example, if you find it hard to see things through to the end, this is often because you are distracted by new ideas—but that probably means that you are really good at coming up with new ideas. Nobody is quite sure how my brain can actually hold all this information. It’s why medical researchers from Queensland to California are so keen to poke around up there. They’re attempting to discover which part of the brain is responsible for long-term memory, in the hope of finding ways to help those who are affected by Alzheimer’s, brain damage or strokes. I spend a lot of time having my brain scanned. In the initial tests I was asked to work out which day of the week random dates had been throughout my life. I’d be asked random questions and then to recall my answers five months later.

Here at Sea Mills Primary School, through our learning across the curriculum, we teach and embed Sea Mills Super Skills that are aimed at developing the essentials skills for learning and life. There’s a shift in how recruiters must think about a candidate’s qualifications. Instead of considering grades and degrees, micro-skills and super skills should be at the forefront of the hiring process.

Before then I’d just assumed I was clumsy, although when I thought about it properly, lots of things began to make sense in retrospect. This explained why I often get undressed and see bruises that I’ve no recollection of acquiring; why during childbirth, after some serious pushing I felt nothing more than a considerable stretch. It’s why the only way I know if I’ve burned myself while cooking is when the aroma of meat reaches my nostrils. I’m a vegan, so what I’m smelling is actually my own scorched flesh. These aren’t just things like being musical, or being able to draw, though we may have those as well. Other natural talents include things like empathy, being able to relate well to others, or organisational skills. This works because we tend to be better at seeing our faults than our strengths. It is therefore helpful to consider our faults as a way of identifying our strong points. A couple of years ago, the majority of our experienced candidates came to SuperSkills for a practical assessment. Try as hard as we might, getting all the references to that route of assessment off the Internet seems impossible. We get calls regularly from people who have seen it. They ask us why they can’t get their painting qualification by practical assessment.

My skills used to be useful for companies. Investors, for instance, would want me to look for patterns in their trades. But since the advent of the super computer I’m a little less helpful to them. I’d have been more useful, I think, if I’d been born hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

Identifying Super-Strengths

LinkedIn analyzed hundreds of thousands of job postings to determine the top skills employers were seeking in 2019. Hard skills and soft skills are equally valued by most companies, with the following 10 skills being the most commonly sought: While super skills and micro-skills might feel abstract, there are some key benefits to framing a candidate evaluation through this lens. First and foremost, super skills and micro-skills are above bias: they transcend race, gender, age, and socioeconomics. No matter where a candidate went to school or how well they performed in class, every individual has a unique set of super skills and micro-skills. Assessments designed to evaluate these two skills categories can overcome human bias inherent in resumes and interviews. Every applicant who goes through a Talent Trial has an equal chance to show their ability, regardless of what their resume says. More than 90% of candidates prefer to be given an opportunity to prove their skills rather than be judged on their résumé. I have an abundance of anandamide in my body, so much that I never experience anxiety, fear or pain.’ Illustration: Lucas Varela/The Observer
