About this deal

Take a look at this graph created on the google search term ‘Board Games’ for people based in Japan: ‘Board Game’ Search Term In Japan This game probably isn’t my favorite Benndorf, but it has been growing on me lately, and might be in the top 5 now. I like the simplicity of the rules and the surprisingly tough decisions that you have to make in a short playtime. The Zatu Games blog was created so that we can bring you as much content as possible about your favourite board games. We have several different types of blog entries just to ensure that we have every covered.

Either way, it’s a treat for any Japan loving board game enthusiasts like me! (And you, I hope!) How popular are board games in Japan?

Final Thoughts

Once you’ve chosen two cards, you will pass the remaining cards on to the next player. Before you look at any new cards, all players will reveal the two cards they’ve selected, and place them into one of three gardens or discard them. Because your concern is with both the numbers on the cards and the types of landscape they represent, both the mathematical and aesthetic parts of your brain are involved in every decision. In a very simple way, this mimics why people enjoy zen gardens: engagement. I haven’t yet had a chance to experience ohanami in Japan for myself and in my research I’ve found conflicting information about whether or not music can be played in the public outdoor celebration of this custom. (Some sources have reported that in the past this was acceptable, while others say it no longer is and is actually considered rude to do so.) As such, I’m inclined to recommend playing Ohanami without any music so players can admire the card gardens they create without any aural distractions.

After each round (all cards have been depleted) there is scoring depending on which round it is. After round 1, only the blue motifs score, after round 2, blue and green motifs score and after the final round all colors score. See the Scoring chart below in the how to play Ohanami Key information section. Even though the board game scene in Japan isn’t too huge (to the levels of Europe of America), it’s still worth a look if you’re interested in doing a few deep dives on the Board Game Geek Forum. To begin a game of Ohanami, each player is dealt a hand of ten cards. A two-player game of Ohanami ready to be played. No list of Japanese board games would be complete without at least one of them being about giant pandas, so here we go!Whilst the traditional Japanese board games could potentially be seen as coming from anywhere, the modern Japanese games all tend to have a theme involved. To complete any of the Monsters’ tasks or to defeat them, players have to gather specific Items, located throughout the village, that they will use (and then discard) at specific locations. For example, to help develop a cure for the Wolf Man, you have to use blue (intellectual) Items at the laboratory or to smash one of Dracula’s coffins, you must use red (physical) items.

Take on the role of a Daimyo (Japanese feudal lord) and lead your armies to victory during the Sengoku period of Japan’s history. Features - Fun blogs about all sorts of things, from our monthly gaming adventures to our must-have Easter games, and more! To resolve the Items, draw the indicated number of Item tokens from the bag and add them to their location, which is found on the bottom of the Item token. Then resolve the Event. Villager (gray) cards must always be resolved, but Events for Monsters are only resolved if that Monster is in your game. If not, ignore the Event. (In the picture above, if the Invisible Man wasn’t in the game, players would ignore the Thief Event.) After round 3: score 3pts for each blue card in your gardens AND 4pts for each green card AND 7pts for each grey card AND score your pink cards based on an arithmetic progression. In other words, you may never place a card with a number that falls between two other cards into a garden. Such a card will have to go into one of your other gardens, or be discarded from the game.

Fun Fact: The Tōkaidō road was a real route in Japan during the Edo period. It connected the two biggest cities in Japan together, Kyoto and Edo (Modern day Tokyo). Commonly known as the ‘East Sea Road’ (東海道), Tōkaidō was by far the most important connecting route in the entire country. Who are we? Clearly, we are gardeners, assigned the task of creating three Zen gardens. The pieces we choose for these gardens must both fit (numerically) and add up to a pleasing whole. Players then receive a new hand of ten cards to start round 2, once again choosing two cards and passing the rest, but now to the right. Players continue building on the rows that they already have, scoring 3 points for each blue card and 4 points for each green card at the end of round two. This is a step by step guide for how to play Ohanami the beautiful card drafting and set collection board game. Additional notions and special rules can be found below the list. These will be referenced for your convenience. Fun Fact: Giant pandas have six digits on their hands. 5 fingers, and a thumb (that’s technically an enlarged wrist bone)

Hanami (or ‘flower viewing’) is the traditional Japanese “custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers” (‘hana’). In most cases the flowers refer to those of the cherry blossom (‘sakura’). This custom involves more than simply looking at the flowers; hanami is celebrated by having an outdoor party beneath the blossoming trees, marking the beginning of spring. Because hanami is so important, an ‘o’ is often added before ‘hanami’ as a sign of politeness and respect .
