About this deal

Gusawsson writes short snappy chapters, alternating between each era and this works incredibly well. The reader's attention is drawn and the anticipation of what is to come next is really thrilling. At first, I had no idea how Lucienne, Lina and Maxine could possibly be connected, but the revelations that are dotted along the way made me gasp with wonder and with admiration for this extremely clever and skilled author. She doesn't put a foot wrong, nothing is out of place, the tension increases, the realisation suddenly hits home and the pure brilliance of the plotting is just outstanding. Ling, Amy. Between Worlds: Women Writers of Chinese Ancestry. New York: Pergamon, 1990. Ling locates Kingston’s work within a historical tradition of Chinese American writers. She highlights Kingston’s need for “writing wrongs” by “writing about the wrongs.”

Anger to brush his teeth, butter his toast, and hold his hand as he crossed the road, following the flashing green ‘WALK’ signal. Anger to sit with him as he tried not to cry, knowing that the walls were thin enough for Neil to hear him. Anger to keep him awake when his mom couldn’t come to soothe away the night terrors, when Billy had to listen to her cry instead through the paper-thin walls. Slap-slap-cry, went the script then. His father’s short, curt dismissive: for God’s sake, stop whining, woman. I barely touched you.Especially haunting is the tale of “No Name Woman,” Maxine’s great-aunt, who drowned herself and her newborn baby in a well. The woman’s husband had gone to America, and she had been forced by a man of the village to lie with him. She gave birth to his child in a pigsty, as was the custom of country women in old China; they believed the gods, who did not snatch piglets, would be fooled. The true punishment for No Name Woman was not the raid of her home by outraged villagers, nor her suicide. The true punishment, Maxine decides, was silence. The family deliberately forgot her. But fifty years later, the nameless woman still haunts Maxine.

No. I don’t know what you’re saying,” Steve had said. “You don’t strike me as the head in the clouds type, Hargrove.” In all of our interviews with workers and the studies that we have read in the space, the issue workers care most about is wages. Garment workers—the large majority of whom are women—for a variety of reasons, are some of the least paid laborers in the world.

Told from the perspective of 3 women in 3 different centuries, it manages to give each of them a unique voice! One thing I love about this author’s writing is the way she seamlessly combines a story with multiple timelines, moving from past to present without hesitation. The author gives each character a distinctive voice. Each era is rich in description and atmosphere, so there’s no confusion. I normally find in this type of book I prefer one character’s story or time period, but not here! Each Women’s story consumes your every waking moment, making The Bleeding nigh on possible to put down. Gym bag hanging from his shoulder, Billy walks down the hall and opens the front door. He’s greeted by the sight of Susan’s wilted rose bushes, dying a slow death under a burning blue sky—but no maroon BMW. No Steve.

Lucienne Docquer is unhappy in her marriage. She finds it difficult to fit in with the Parisian elite and the social circles they gravitate toward. Originally from Lac-Clarence in Quebec, her accent is different and sometimes she struggles with the Parisienne dialect, leaving her ofttimes lonely and isolated at social events. She dotes on her two little girls, Jeanne and Rose but one day her world upends when tragedy strikes and their home burns to the ground before the two little girls could be rescued. Traumatised, Lucienne, through a surprising source, becomes entranced with the world of spiritualism, one where communication with the spirits of the dead is a strong belief. With these safeguards in place, Billy is able to vanish from his father’s doorstep, and the only person to see him go is his step-sister, Max.Learning was to become Maxine’s escape route to independence, but her early school experiences humiliated the little girl, who failed kindergarten and got “a zero IQ” in first grade. Suffering from an intense shyness, she at first refused to speak in school. From men teachers in the Chinese school, held each afternoon until 7:30 p.m., Maxine learned to chant. Later she developed an American-feminine speaking personality. But her traumatic early years marked her childhood. In an agonizingly vivid scene, Maxine torments another girl who remains silent even in Chinese school. Maxine corners her after school in the girls’ lavatory and brutally ridicules the girl, pulls some of her hair out, and defies her to say a word. Finally, Maxine cries too.“Now look what you’ve done.” I scolded. “You’re going to pay for this. . . . You don’t see I’m trying to help you out, do you? Do you want to be like this, dumb (do you know what dumb means?), your whole life? Don’t you ever want to be a cheerleader? Or a pompon girl? What are you going to do for a living? Yeah, you’re going to have to work because you can’t be a housewife. Somebody has to marry you before you can be a housewife. . . . You think somebody is going to take care of you all your stupid life?”

You'll first notice it out of the corner of your eye: the woman in shades, awkwardly pointing her smartphone camera in your direction. She thinks she's sneaky—she's not. Then you'll catch the gentle awws as you walk down the street, until it starts to get more intense. Soon, people stop you with questions or to ask for a picture. Gritty, bone-chilling, and harrowing – it’s not for the faint of heart, and not to be missed´ Crime by the Book There is always a balance. Hopefully, this documentary can reflect that for so many people who might be going through the same struggle, might have the same dream that they feel is unachievable, unattainable. There absolutely is an opportunity for growth in every aspect of your life -- good and bad." Rapid growth of the Chinese Communist Party, with Mao a national leader.
