About this deal

I could have done something differently, in fact we all could have –‘in fact’ shows that the two ideas are linked together and support one another. Studies have shown that using imagery without testing what you have learned immediately after learning leads to less good learning than rote learning. In our studies and and courses we always tested learning immediately after a set of words had been learned to avoid this problem. Also, as noted above, just learning vocabuary is not the optimal way to use the method. IS MAKING UP YOUR OWN IMAGES BETTER THAN USING OTHERS The various list-learning mnemonics - the method of loci, the pegword method, the link method, the story method - can all be adapted to help you learn lists of words. In general, learning lists is not a particularly useful technique for learning a language, however, there are some circumstances in which it can be helpful. The Linkword Italian Levels 1-4 course teaches a 1200 word vocabulary and cover all major grammar points in 60- 80 hours of learning. The average school pupil learns a vocabulary of 800-900 words in 4 years. So whilst I agree there are huge limitations, I am sold on mnemonics and memory devices for vocabulary - I find that the complexity to create the images is worth it as after a time I recall the word but don't have to recall the "scene" I created.

Linking words are words that connect ideas together in a piece of writing. It shows that two things are related in some way, or that the point you are making has supporting information. The difference between linking words and simple paragraph starters that we looked at previously, is that linking words can be found at the start of paragraphs, but also in the middle of sentences to connect two ideas together too. Why Should I Learn Linking Words/Connecting Words? Linkword is a mnemonic system promoted by Michael Gruneberg since at least the early 1980s for learning languages based on the similarity of the sounds of words. The process involves creating an easily visualized scene that will link the words together. One example is the Russian word for cow (корова, pronounced roughly karova): think and visualize "I ran my car over a cow." The keyword mnemonic is certainly an effective technique, particularly for learning to read in another language, as opposed to writing or talking (where you have to actively remember the words you want, rather than simply recognize them when you see them). But I wouldn't advocate using the keyword mnemonic on 1000 words, or even most of them. I would keep it for the hard words. ( Read more on the usefulness of the keyword mnemonic for learning vocabulary. Find out what the keyword method is here) LinkwordI failed my test because I didn’t study –‘because’ gets the reader ready to learn why somebody failed their test. Arabic, Cantonese, Chinese (Mandarin), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi (Urdu), Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish (European), Spanish (S. American), Swahili, Swedish, Thai, Turkish and Welsh. If you got most of them right, the Linkword method will help you learn the language of your choice. Linkword also teaches grammar in a really easy way. What is the evidence it works in general?

Gruneberg M. and Morris P. (Eds) (1978) Aspects of Memory, Methuen and Co. London. Second Editions published in 1992 The courses use a large number of memory enhancing principles, including the method of association, spaced retrieval, and optimal testing patterns to increase the speed of learning and to increase the amount of memory of what has been learned. Linkword Languages courses are developed by Dr Michael Gruneberg, an internationally recognised expert in memory and learning methods. Gruneberg M.M.,(1996) The use of mnemonic strategies in the learning of non Roman foreign language alphabets. Language Learning Journal, 1, 82-83 Many teachers and students of language have used the same technique, and many examples have been used independently by many people (e.g., to remember that in Thai, khao means rice, imagine a cow eating rice).

Adult learners can also benefit greatly. Why do dyslexic learners benefit from the Linkword method? The Linkword German Levels 1-4 course teaches a 1200 word vocabulary and cover all major grammar points in 60- 80 hours of learning. The average school pupil learns a vocabulary of 800-900 words in 4 years. A large number of independent studies show that Linkword is up to 3 times faster than normal learning methods. If you do need to remember a list, my own recommendation is the story mnemonic, unless you are already expert at one of the other techniques. The advantage of the story mnemonic is that it is very simple to master.

To be quite frank, I would say that the appropriate study of a run-of-the-mill, freely-available, online phrase book, replete with recorded sentences, such as Book2/50 Languages, would be a much greater use of one’s precious time. The Linkword French Levels 1-4 course teaches a 1200 word vocabulary and cover all major grammar points in 60- 80 hours of learning. The average school pupil learns a vocabulary of 800-900 words in 4 years.

Pimsleur is a tried and tested language-learning programme. Ideal for people who are not academic or prefer learning by doing, Pimsleur focuses on speaking and listening, rather than reading and writing. Personally, I have used this many times, and I have even written a more [etailed review on the Pimsleur course for Japanese. By the time you finish the course you will be able to read and understand the average newspaper article and speak French in a very wide range of situations you will meet abroad. A second study which was carried out in another well known school, compared a group of pupils who were dyslexic with another group of students who were of average ability at language learning. Before the study started, all students were given a vocabulary test in French and it was found that dyslexic learners were significantly poorer in their vocabulary knowledge. Linkword levels 1-4 teach a 1200 word vocabulary and cover all major grammar points up to GCSE level in 60- 80 hours. The average school pupil learns a vocabulary of 800-900 words in 4 years. The MP3 Audio talking book version involves 22+ hours of recordings and plays on all MP3 players including iPhone/iPad and Android devices. It has identical content to the software courses.

The Linkword Spanish (Latin American) Levels 1-4 course teaches a 1200 word vocabulary and cover all major grammar points in 60- 80 hours of learning. The average school pupil learns a vocabulary of 800-900 words in 4 years. The MP3 course will play on all devices that support MP3, including MP3 players, Laptops, PCs, Macs, Tablets (Android and iPad) and Smartphones (Android and iPhone). By the time you finish one of our level 4 courses you will have a really extensive vocabulary (approximately 1200 words) and associated grammar. Dr Gruneberg has also published a large number of studies in refereed journals showing the effectiveness of his Linkword courses. We know of no other language course where performance levels have been published. Not only have the studies shown how fast is learning with Linkword, but how much more enjoyable learning is as well and how much it boosts confidence. More about Dr Gruneberg
