About this deal

This type of formula contains cows' milk proteins that have already been partly broken down (partially hydrolysed). This is supposed to make it easier to digest and help prevent digestive problems such as colic and constipation. However, there's no evidence for this. Source of Calcium, vitamin D and protein. Calcium, vitamin D and protein are needed for normal growth and development of bone in children. The chemical structure of phytoestrogens is similar to the female hormone oestrogen. Because of this, there are concerns that they could affect a baby's reproductive development, especially in babies who drink only soya-based infant formula.

Toddlers from the age of 1 year need about 300-360ml of HiPP growing up milk per day, either as a drink, on cereals or added to their foods. This is only a guide and your toddler may need more or less than this. If you require more advice, please consult your health professional. Lactose intolerance occurs when your body cannot digest lactose, a natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. It's often temporary and can occur in your baby's first few months until their levels of lactase (the enzyme that digests lactose) have become fully established. Hungrier baby formula (hungry milk) is suitable from birth, but ask a midwife or health visitor for advice first. Other than the addition of DHA, an LCP which the EFSA has accepted contributes to the normal visual development of infants up to 12 months, the other extra ingredients are not of proven benefit; therefore, having these additional ingredients doesn't make one formula milk more superior than another. If they were, then the formula milk compositional criteria would be amended to include it. What is the closest baby formula to breast milk?

Bode L. Human milk oligosaccharides: every baby needs a sugar mama. Glycobiology 2012; 22(9): 1147–62. No. The effectiveness of comfort milks over infant milks in reducing the symptoms of colic is not established. Instead of switching formula, small changes to the timing and quantity of feeds can help to manage colic. Although it's available in pharmacies and supermarkets, it's recommended you only use it on the advice of a health professional.

Goats' milk formulas are not suitable for infants with cows' milk allergy (also known as cows' milk protein allergy), as the proteins they contain are very similar. Hungrier baby formula (hungry milk) Alpro Soya Growing Up Drink is available to buy at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Waitrose, Morrisons and Ocado. Keep your eyes peeled for Alpro Oat Growing Up Drink landing in retailers soon. What is a First Look? Growing-up and toddler milks are marketed as an alternative to whole cows' milk for toddlers and children over 1 year old. There's no evidence to suggest that these products provide extra nutritional benefits for young children.

What is a First Look?

The cows' milk in formula contains 2 types of proteins – whey and casein. First infant formula is based on whey protein which is thought to be easier to digest than other types of formula. I'm a big fan of both drinks because they're the only easily available dairy alternatives I've found that have enough calories and minerals for young children. My only criticism is that the soya version is quite sweet so I'll be looking to switch to the oat." Toddlers are different and learn to drink from a straw at different ages. Milk can be decanted into a clean beaker if preferred. Hojsak I, et al. Young Child Formula: A position paper by the ESPGHAN Committee on Nutrition. JPGN 2018, Jan;66(1):177-185. The Alpro Soya Growing Up Drink has been my go-to for a number of years. Having two young children who are intolerant to dairy with different symptoms, I was over the moon to find a product that they loved the taste of and that I trusted. We tried the Alpro Oat Growing Up Drink on cereal first and I was very surprised that my fussy toddler didn't notice the difference from her normal soya. I then gave her some in a cup. The oat drink is less sweet and has a thinner texture than the soya so I was sure she'd refuse it, but she later asked for more! We tried both Alpro Growing Up Drinks as a standalone drink and in cereal. They taste sweeter than our usual brand of oat milk, but have almost half the sugar content and double the protein. Both drinks were a good consistency with the oat drink tasting slightly creamier, making it the more popular choice for drinking. The added vitamins and minerals give me reassurance that my children will be getting all the essentials needed for growth and development.

Goehring KC et al. Similar to Those Who Are Breastfed, Infants Fed a Formula Containing 2’- Fucosyllactose Have Lower Inflammatory Cytokines in a Randomized Controlled Trial J Nutr. 2016;146:2559–2566. The instructions for making up anti-reflux formulas may be different to standard formula. The usual guidelines for how to make up baby formula recommend using boiled water that has stood for no more than 30 minutes, so that the temperature is still above 70C. Growing-up milk (GUM) products intended for children between 1 and 3 years of age are increasingly being introduced into the diets of young children. Although not a necessity for adequate nutrition of that age group, they can compensate for nutritional deficiencies which may occur in the transition phase of infant nutrition to family food, particularly when bad dietary patterns prevail in the family. For that purpose, GUM should be composed to decrease the overall protein intake which tends to be higher than the reference values for that age. This can be achieved by diluting fat-reduced cow's milk to a protein level comparable to infant or follow-on formulae and by partially replacing cow's milk fat with appropriate vegetable oils to increase the content of essential fatty acids and possibly by adding long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, docosahexaenoic and arachidonic acids whilst preserving the content of some minerals (such as calcium and phosphorus) and vitamins (B2 and B12) well represented in cow's milk. The content of iron, iodine, zinc and the vitamins A and D should be the same as in a follow-on formula. Based on available evidence, GUM should not be promoted as a necessity in the nutrition of young children. If your baby is drinking around 500-600ml of infant formula a day, they should be receiving enough vitamin D to meet their needs, so they won’t need additional drops. This formula is suitable for babies who are lactose intolerant. This means they cannot absorb lactose, which is a sugar that's naturally in milk and dairy products. Claims such as ‘Closest to breast milk’, 'Gold advanced System' and 'Complete nutrition' are meaningless, as the exact ingredients of breast milk are unknown and change according to a baby’s age and feeding patterns. Keep in mind that lactose intolerance is not the same as a cow's milk allergy. Lactose-free formula contains cow’s milk proteins that are found in normal infant formula, so it isn't suitable for babies with a cow’s milk allergy. Although most follow-on formulas, apart from HiPP Organic, provide a similar amount of calcium to cow's milk per 100ml, they are all higher in sugar and more expensive. Higher levels of sugar can encourage a preference for sweet foods and in the long-term can lead to dental cavities.
