The perspective of a Filipino American is rare in mainstream young adult literature, so I'm happy de la Cruz could offer up her own perspective so that people in the age range for this book can learn some real lessons from it. I learned lessons too, but the writing was very surface level and the take-aways were handed to me on a silver platter. Just another factor that contributed to the immaturity of this boo. Honestly, this book probably would have been great if it were catagorized as Middle Grade.
