Nowadays, bathtub gin is made and sold for cultural nostalgia and for a fun cooking project. You can still make one at home or buy a commercial brand that manufactures it as a specialty spirit.

If Genever is the heady forefather of modern gin and London Dry is the modern standard bearer, Old Tom is the neglected middle child. Not as malty and heavy-handed as Genever. Not as spicy and arid as London Dry. Often sweeter and rounder than your more modern gins, Old Tom gin offers a great introduction to a somewhat divisive spirit. Concurrently, Hayman Distillers in the UK dusted off a family recipe for Old Tom Gin hailing from 1870. Hayman’s hit the market in 2007. Ransom hit the market late 2008. And the definition of Old Tom Gin became even more vague. Thus, infusing a gin with at least one botanical during distillation (e.g., juniper) makes it a distilled gin, not a compound or bathtub gin. Bathtub Gin, Compound Gin, and Cold Compounded Gin Even though this style of Gin is still considered cheap or inferior, brands and bars started to romanticize Bathtub Gin, creating new products of solid quality like Ableforths Bathtub Gin. Old Tom gin is often considered a bridge between gin’s original form, genever, and the London dry styles we know and love today. This is believed for two reasons: Old Tom appeared chronologically after genever did, and Old Tom gin is drier than genever but sweeter than London dry.
