What you need to know: All these varieties are not “Munich beers“ in the sense of the protected geographical indication, which must meet strict EU guidelines. (Pale) Ale, Stout, Porter and co. are rather young phenomena in the Munich beer world, you could say: in Munich, Ale is a hipster beer. It is top-fermented, i.e. it is produced using an older method that does not depend on keeping temperatures low, as bottom fermentation does. Ale is often produced in microbreweries, in small beer kitchens, or “Bierküchen”. Ale brewers usually have tattoos and see themselves as Robin Hood types, waging war on “manufactured beer”. Or they simply have a taste for unconventional flavors.

Where to drink it: Anywhere that is “gemütlich” (cosy): in a beer garden, a beer hall, in the Bavarian corner pub – the “Boazn”, by the Isar, in the Wirtshaus, in front of the TV. In 1759, the Augustinian Monks of Munich were among the first members of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. [4] Meanwhile, during this era, Augustiner's annual output reached 250,000 liters, three times the amount of an average brewery of the time. This is exactly what we ought to expect to happen when a Christian takes their doctrinal beliefs to their logical conclusions. Al Mohler showed us the same horrific inflexibility when he got presented with his idolized Bible’s very obvious approval of slavery. What Augustine Thought Hell Was Like. Helles” (pronounced HELL-us) is a German word meaning pale or bright in English. So, you can expect your Helles lagers to be bright, pale yellow in color. I gotta say, it’s thoughtful of the Mad Blood God of the Desert (MBGD) to ensure that his future torture victims will feel every one of his cruel ministrations! I bet this idea scared the willies out of 4th-century Christians onward — which is likely exactly why it came to exist as a threat, of course.Weißbier: Creamy and rich, the aromas and flavours of this honey-beige Weizen are like a cross between banana custard with a sprinkling of light brown sugar and creamed butter with cloves over country bread. There's a number adorning every bottle of Augustiner. 1328. The year the Augustiner monks first began brewing beer at their monastery, near Munich. An occupation designed to keep their minds on prayer, and their thirsts quenched. And to raise a few coins for the coffers at the same time. In 1880, Joseph Wagner was recognized as a founding member of the Bavarian Beer alliance, and later in 1887, Augustiner's iconic "JW" trademark with the bishop's staff was registered. But how did we get from Augustine monks to locally beloved foundations that carry on the work of the man whose initials still grace the Augustiner logo? And who was J.W.? Ever since then, in Augustine’s theology, humans commit evil deeds because our spirits are sinful. Evil springs forth from the corruption of our spirits.

Which beers go best with your frankfurters? Which beer goes best before your bratwurst? Which beer compliments after dinner specials? Which German beer is good for breakfast? This and much more will need to be discussed by you and your comrades who have traveled Europe and beyond. Most people are happy with bog standard beer. They’re happy drinking Carling or Heineken, and I don’t mind that. Each to their own. However, if you are in the top 1% (and growing) of drinkers who want to discover, understand and appreciate the craft, quality and value that the best independent breweries create then we are here for you. Where to drink it: Pils is drunk in the pub, traditionally in the “Boazn” (local/corner pub), but also in restaurants. It is a classic beer on tap, and is often poured very slowly, which is why it is less carbonated than other beers. If you like the original taste with carbonic acid, you should therefore advise the waiter to use a normal tapping speed. This might sound like one of the weirdest Christian ideas ever, but Augustine wrote that unbaptized infants go to Hell and are damned too — but don’t worry! They don’t get treated too roughly.

It is not known when Augustiner beer was first featured at the Oktoberfest, but the first record of an Augustiner beer stall is featured on a picture dating from 1867. The first appearance of an Augustiner beer "castle" was later in 1903, and finally in 1926, the Augustiner Festhalle was erected for the first time. The original tent featured a tower, which was later removed from the construction design during the years 1949-2010. The tower was reinstated in 2010 in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Oktoberfest, and has continued to be a feature of the Festhalle to this day. Since 1987, Augustiner is the only brewery of the 6 featured at Oktoberfest, to exclusively pour from their wooden barrels. Augustiner Bräu is a brewery in Munich, Germany. Established in 1328, [1 ] it is Munich's oldest still independent brewery and produces some of Munich's most popular beers. The company is owned by the Edith Haberland Wagner Trust 51% and the Inselkammer-Family 49%. Surely, the lightest of all punishments will be laid on those who have added no further sin to that originally contracted. Among the rest, who have added further Sins to that one, they will suffer a damnation somewhat more tolerable in proportion to the lesser degree of their iniquity. Where to drink it: At Oktoberfest. However, special Festbiers are also produced for other occasions, such as Christmas.

Helles is certainly a less hyped style these days but volume-wise and historically it is a very popular style, arguably the most popular in the world as least as an influential piece for other light beers,” says Moser. “I think that the growth of craft beer has been a great thing for exploration of flavor, but for those that appreciate the flavor of well-made beer in its purest form, Helles is hard to beat. I think a well-rounded beer menu is important and while an experimental IPA is attractive and alluring, a perfect Helles is tried, true and something a beer drinker can return to again and again.” In these ways, Augustine shaped Hell as a belief. Rather than blaming demons for temptation, he held people responsible for their fates. The MBGD was absolutely not responsible for any of that. Oh, so THAT’s where that notion gets Christians. The Augustiner remains in private hands thanks to the energy of Ferdinand Schmid. Schmid was regarded as the “patron saint” of Munich beer, not only for his defense of Bavaria’s brewing tradition, but for convincing Edith Haberland-Wagner, the last direct heir of Joseph Wagner, to establish a foundation to run the brewery prior to her passing. I hope I’ve shown you that Hell has a distinct genealogy. The Hell of Augustine would have been unintelligible to whoever wrote the Gospel of Mark, just as a modern evangelical Christian’s idea of Hell, I’m sure, would likely have been unthinkably strange and theologically nonsensical to Augustine. Helles is extremely versatile,” Porter says. “Obviously nothing against the traditional German fare – but Helles is just at home next to a punchy bowl of pad thai from your favorite take-out spot or playing the malty accompaniment to an herbaceous pizza topped with red pepper flakes.” It stayed that way for nearly 500 years, with the results of their efforts sold at the monastery tavern in the city - much to the delight of the locals, who developed a taste for the revered beer that flowed from Augustiner's barrels.

Weissbier (wheat beer)

But Augustine said that his god had had nothing at all to do with evil’s arrival into the world. Evil, to Augustine, isn’t a force in its own right, but rather just the absence of good. Original Sin — the innocent mistakes of Adam and Eve, made before they even knew what good and evil even were — had opened the door to evil. He almost certainly means babies. After all, babies haven’t added any new sins to their Original Sin plate. (He confirms our suspicions in The City of God at the end of Chapter 3.) Who drinks it: Eisbach surfers, Americans (microbreweries are hugely popular in the USA), anyone wishing to demonstrate their cosmopolitanism. Phenotypically speaking, ale brewers and ale drinkers are similar (tattoos, beards, t-shirts bearing cryptic prints and, in extreme cases: plug earrings).
