About this deal

As in Cat out of Hell (2015), Truss piles up ingenious plot twists, preposterous coincidences, snarky asides, and characters out of P.G. Wodehouse, this time replacing her murderous felines with a setup out of the genre’s golden age. Readers who can suspend their disbelief are in for quite a workout. Throughout the book the author is a strong presence, becoming almost a character in the story itself through use of parentheticals and conversational tendencies that read as if someone is talking to the reader directly as they might relate an occurance or tell a story. There is a strong feeling of being in a room with the author, perhaps as a stand-up comedy routine is being delivered.

Seeing Circuits in Action . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 85 The policemen here are either bumbling, apathetic, clueless, or, in one case, clever but not necessarily all that smart. So I can't say I bonded with any of them. The theater folk--actors, playwright, critics--are self-centered, arrogant, self-serving. The Brighton criminals and street folk we get to meet are, let's face it, not exactly good, but they certainly are entertaining. As are the characters we meet at the Hippodrome: Dr Mesmer, and the Strong Lady who can bend iron, something that turns out to be a useful talent in everyday life..

Seeing the Light . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19 This is the first of a proposed crime series, set in Brighton. We begin in 1951, with the ‘Middle Street Massacre,’ where Inspector Steine (pronounced ‘Steen’) believes he has wiped out crime in the town, when two major gangs manage to wipe each other out. He has rather lived off this event, which was made into a film and we meet up with him, six years later, enjoying a pleasant and delusional existence as a minor celebrity. And Victoria Lee is officially on my list of favorite author's who write about gender and sexuality. There is a constant discussion in the community about who "has the right" to tell certain stories. And while I 100% believe that authors can write outside their own experiences, there is something extra special about reading own voices experiences.

My thanks to NetGalley and Bloomsbury USA, a division of Bloomsbury Publishing for providing an advanced digital copy of A Shot in the Dark by Lynne Truss. While it is classified as a mystery, I found it to belong more in the humor category. The mystery as it exists is secondary to the story itself, as told by the unseen author.

As someone who’s pansexual and married to a trans man this was life changing to read. I enjoyed seeing my relationship aspects 🌶️ specifically because it’s something I’ve never personally read before. stars. Basically once I started this book it was impossible to put down. So hard to put down in fact that I got distracted reading outside and ended up with a weird embarrassing sunburn. This is meant to be taken as high praise.

Exposure Basics . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 41 This book was truly everything I could have wanted or expected and more. A deeply passionate romance where I truly believed in the connection between the two main characters, and also an exploration of some deeply personal and heavy topics. A SHOT IN THE DARK is not a swoony, lighthearted romance, but that doesn’t make it any less romantic. The characters are so messy and real, and I couldn’t put the book down. Truly could not recommend reading this book enough.

Overall, I just really was rooting for both characters, especially Ely as she slowly started to reconnect with her Jewish faith and find community again. It’s also probably important to know that this is a M/F romance that does feature a trans man, but it refreshingly wasn’t really a focal point of the plot or even presented as one of the most interesting things about Wyatt. So while there were more minor reactions to DTwP, there was no increase in seizures or encephalopathy compared to DTaP, which supports the conclusion that DTwP does not increase the risk of these neurological events. However, a Canadian study found a decrease in hospital admissions for febrile seizures following the transition to DTaP, suggesting that DTwP did increase the risk of febrile seizures. It should be noted, however, that febrile seizures do not generally increase the risk of developing epilepsy or permanent neurological damage. Everyone in the art world is obsessed with Wyatt Cole. He’s immensely talented and his notoriously reclusive personal life makes him even more compelling. But behind closed doors, Wyatt’s past is a painful memory. After coming out as transgender, Wyatt was dishonorably discharged from the military and disowned by his family. Since these traumatic experiences, Wyatt has worked hard for his sobriety and his flourishing art career. He can’t risk it all for Ely, no matter how attracted to her he is or how bad he feels about insisting shedrop his class in exchange for a strictly professional mentorship. Wyatt can help with her capstone photography project, but he cannot, under any circumstances, fall in love with her in the process. Disclaimer: I received a review copy for free via NetGalley, but I am voluntarily leaving my honest review. Many thanks to the publishers, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Dell , and the author for the opportunity! Brighton on the south coast of England is the location for ‘A Shot in the Dark’ and it begins with the re-telling of the infamous Middle Street Massacre of 1951, which brought instant fame and adulation to the newly appointed Inspector Steine (pronounced Steen). Steine announced his arrival in town that year with the proclamation that visitors could “Come here to have fun, enjoy yourselves; get drunk; throw up; copulate under our stately piers like beasts of the field if you must; but don’t commit crime matey, not on my patch” Everyone in the art world is obsessed with Wyatt Cole. He’s immensely talented and his notoriously reclusive personal life makes him all the more compelling. But there’s a reason why his past is hard for him to publicize. After coming out as transgender, Wyatt was dishonorably discharged from the military and disowned by his family. From then on he committed to sobriety and channeled his pain into his flourishing art career. While Ely and Wyatt’s relationship started out on a physical level, their similar struggles spark a much deeper connection. The chemistry is undeniable, but their new relationship as teacher and student means desperately wanting what they can’t have.
