I particularly enjoyed the chapters depicting the Queen’s childhood and the glamorous and vivid years before her coronation. The queen’s sense of humour, love for her family and sense of duty are consistent themes throughout the book. The Big Jubilee Read, created by BBC Arts and The Reading Agency, embraces prize-winning books such as Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall, Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo and Seamus Heaney’s 1966 Nobel prize-winning poetry collection Death of a Naturalist. I may have a to-read list as tall as a mountain and a bookshelf already overflowing with books, but I still simply can’t resist upcoming book releases.

I found the chapter about Prince Charles and the Duchess if Cornwall really interesting, particularly the focus on how to introduce her to the public. Kad ir kaip kai kurie mėgtų kritikuoti žmones, turinčius daug pinigų ir turtų, tenka pripažinti, kad kartais įdomu ne tik apie juos paskaityti, bet ir pamatyti, iš ko toks gyvenimas sudarytas iš tiesų (dažniausiai tik išorė būna tobulybės ikona), o kūrinys „Karalienė“ tą tikslingai parodo. „Karalienė“ - įtaigus pasakojimas, tikrų deimantų šešėlyje parodantis, kaip neretai paprasta juos supainioti su dirbtiniais, nieko vertais. I don't know what is that has fascinated me about her, I'm not British, I don't know her, I haven't lived with her. Still there's something here in her that's evident for all of us to see, whether her subject or not, and there's some value in her that is undeniable. She was a constant for such a long time, she is a real historic figure, she carries the essence of a world long gone. She was the Queen. A full to bursting of detail book,the author firstly needs credit for his work,I have rarely read such a fact laden book about anyone,it is fascinating and the book basically takes you from birth onwards and misses nothingIt was thought Philip would have difficulty accepting the junior role in a marital partnership. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands cautioned the young prince to think hard before ‘entering the Royal cage’. Philip did have problems accepting the restrictions for quite a while. Morton mentions some of the rumours that circulated involving the prince and his equerry, Australian Mike Parker, during their world tours but found no confirmation that any of them were true. Morton describes how the Queen navigates the choppy waters of life with grace, dignity and poise, weathering the scandals her family has been plagued with across the generations. For years she prayed for her mother to give birth to a son. She longed to be spared her destiny as Britain’s future Queen. Her dream was to live in the country surrounded by children, dogs and horses. It was a more digestible read than I was expecting. Books like this are usually hard going for me with information overload but this one works.

Platinum Jubilee Beacons: The United Kingdom’s long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons will continue for the Platinum Jubilee. It is my truest belief that nothing ever written about her life and legacy could ever make it justice. Hers is a life like a fairytale, but only because that was her on the throne. She was bound to her duty to her people, she was committed, she was fierce but unbending. She was loyal and she was on a mission. And she reigned long and true.
