About this deal

The Accomplice is a cunning, breathless and bloody tale in which nothing is quite what it seems. Steve Cavanagh tells it with such relish you're not sure whether to gasp or guffaw The plot as fast paced and on occasions it’s belting along at warp speed making it exciting and completely gripping. At times I yell ‘Nooooo’ which gets a few odd glances but that’s how involved you get. It’s almost like you’re there and living it with them. The Sandman killings have been solved. Daniel Miller murdered fourteen people before he vanished. His wife, Carrie, now faces trial as his accomplice. The FBI, the District Attorney, the media and everyone in America believe she knew and helped cover up her husband’s crimes.

Wow, with this powerful latest instalment of this terrific series I don’t know if my heart is in my mouth or it’s sinking, all I can tell is that it’s all over the place!

Eddie and his team become involved in the trial of Carrie at the very last moment when her lawyer’s forced to recuse himself. Eddie is reticent but fellow lawyer Kate, former judge Harry and firm PI Bloch convince Eddie to meet Carrie and he believes in her innocence so takes her on. Fictional legal eagles are flying high these days – just look at how successful the recent Netflix adaptation of Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer has been. And then we have Eddie Flynn, creation of Northern Irish author Steve Cavanagh, featuring here in the seventh book of a series that’s garnered awards, high praise and oodles of sales. The final character I need to mention is the killer known as the Sandman. While I won’t go into too much detail here about them to preserve some plot details, they serve as a sinister and threatening figure throughout the story, and their presence really impacts the events of the narrative. Cavanagh goes out of his way to make the Sandman appear as deadly and deranged as possible, and it was fascinating to get a glimpse into his mind, especially as he truly believes that the Sandman is his true persona. Watching him work his deadly skills in several disconcerting point of view chapters really adds to the intensity of the narrative, and he ended up being a particularly impressive literary villain. I really had a great time with all these amazing and complex characters, be they old and new, and Cavanagh has once again really showcased his excellent skill when it comes to writing damaged people. As always with Steve Cavanagh books, we have a roller coaster ride on the way to a thrilling conclusion. I wanted to both devour and savour this book, it was so very well done. It all works here because it’s all part of the same plot so (as is sometimes the case) it’s not distracting focussing on several investigations at once which miraculously fit together at the end. Cavanagh sets a fast pace from the beginning and it doesn’t let up until the very very end. And he offers up some very clever twists, bumping this up to a rare 4.5 star read for me. Bring on Eddie Flynn #8 I say!

But The Sandman, AKA Daniel Miller, isn’t home. Instead, his wife Carrie is there alone, professing no knowledge of what her husband has been up to. Delaney is moved by the obviously shaken woman’s protestations of innocence, until the search team finds something that makes the agent see Carrie from another angle – and to immediately arrest her. Soon Carrie Miller is the most hated woman in America, and in the absence of her multi-murdering husband all eyes are trained on her forthcoming trial as an accomplice to his crimes. Book 7 in the Eddie Flynn series based in the lawyers hometown of New York, this one was an absolute blast. Yes, voor @lsamsterdam mocht ik deze nieuwe thriller van @sscav lezen! En ook deze keer was het weer genieten.

The Accomplice by Steve Cavanagh will be published in Australia by Hachette in late July 2022, though is available now elsewhere. Cavanagh was in the zone when he was writing The Accomplice, and I deeply enjoyed how the entire story came together. Like most of Cavanagh’s novels, the pacing in The Accomplice was spot on and the reader is never really given a chance to relax or put the novel down, which ensures that they try really hard to get through everything in one go (it worked on me). There was an excellent blend of styles throughout The Accomplice, and Cavanagh once again did a great job of combining the darker subject matter of a disturbed killer, with the lighter scenes that focused on Eddie Flynn’s outrageous behaviour. The scenes focused on the Sandman were particularly dark and gripping, especially as you get to see directly into his diseased mind, and the use of them throughout the novel really helped to amp up the drama and threat, while also moving the narrative along in some impressive directions. Likewise, you get some intriguing and powerful character driven scenes from some of the other major characters, such as Flynn’s investigator Bloch and newcomer Gabriel Lake, as they get obsessed with finding the Sandman and bringing him to justice. With his wife on trial, the Sandman is forced to come out of hiding to save her from a life sentence. He will kill to protect her and everyone involved in the case is a target. Eddie Flynn won't take a case unless his client is innocent. Now, he has to prove to a jury, and the entire world, that Carrie Miller was just another victim of the Sandman. She didn't know her husband's dark side and she had no part in the murders. But so far, Eddie and his team are the only ones who believe her.

And that, my friends, is where Eddie Flynn comes in. Carrie already has a high profile lawyer on the case, but Otto Peltier is used to dealing with tax havens and other such financial matters for his mega-rich clients. He’s savvy enough to realise that he’s out of his depth, and turns to Eddie and his team for help. If Carrie is innocent, can they turn the tide of hatred thats flowing around her and prove it? Carrie’s husband, Daniel Miller is being sought in connection with about 13 murders but hasn’t been seen for a year. Is he even still in the country? He is known as the Sandman for reasons which you learn when you the book. I’m not going to say 🤐. Now the DA has charged Carrie with being an accomplice or at least knowing about 6 of these murders. She went to Peltier (as he was Danny’s lawyer) wanting legal advice about what to do, what to tell the police. She insists that, while she developed suspicions about her husband’s murderous activities, she was not absolutely sure and had no actual evidence. You know what's the worst thing that will happen to you once you finish the last Eddie Flynn book by Steve Cavanagh? Wonder how to cope until the next one!!! 😱😫 Kudos, Mr. Cavanagh, for keeping me entertained and highly in tune with the world of legal thrillers. From the get-go we know the name of The Sandman, that’s not the problem, what we’re concerned with is whether his wife was aware that he was a serial killer and whether she was a knowing participant in some of his crimes. Daniel Miller is a wealthy hedge fund manager and has been running amok for years. His wife, Carrie, is absolutely distraught that her vague suspicions have proven to be true.

The situation for Carrie Miller looks hopeless but she has Eddie on her side. She was seen with her husband (the suspected Sandman) in front of a house, watching it, where two people were murdered later that night. So she’s suspected of aiding her husband, at least she must have known about his activities. It’s up to Eddie to prove she’s not a killer and that she didn’t know for sure Daniel was. Glad to return to the world of Steve Cavanagh and the Eddie Flynn legal thrillers, I turned to the latest instalment of the series. Cavanagh takes an interesting approach to the law and investigation in a piece that shows just how on the ball the author can be when it comes to the world of serial killers. A strong story and great characters help elevate the book and make me yearn for more as soon as possible. I’m not usually a fan of detail but Cavanagh offers up loads and has the talent to drop it in seamlessly without detracting from the events unfolding. The Accomplice

In addition, Cavanagh also introduces the character of Gabriel Lake, a former FBI agent turned private investigator who specialises in catching serial killers. A brilliant man with interesting ideas about the way to hunt killers which goes against the established theories of the FBI, Lake is an integral part of the plot, as he helps Flynn with his case in the hope of catching the Sandman. However, there is also a deep well of anger within Lake, due to both his past and his personal connection to the Sandman case, and this becomes a major problem for the protagonists as the book goes on. You never quite know what Lake’s motivations or intentions are, and he ends up adding an entire extra layer of complexity to an already twisty plot. Okay. So if I worked with Eddie Flynn, I’d be making sure that I had a really good life insurance policy. Assuming I could even get a life insurance policy that is. It’s fair to say that where Eddie goes, trouble with follow, and if it’s not Eddie, it’s those around them who end up in the crossfire. This is definitely the case with The Accomplice where Eddie and the team come face to face (sort of) with a killer who will stop at nothing to ensure his co-defendant is found not guilty. Even if that means breaking cover to commit more murder. This was a fast paced, high stakes, full on tension kind of read – just the way I like it. The Sandman killings have been solved. Daniel Miller murdered fourteen people before he vanished. His wife, Carrie, now faces trial as his accomplice. The FBI, the District Attorney, the media and everyone in America believe she knew and helped cover up her husband's crimes. Zelfs Eddie Flynn...
