Rizzoli Bookstore has been used as a prominent location in the films Falling in Love (1984), Manhattan (1979), and True Story (2015), in addition to television series such as Seinfeld. The puzzling death of a healthy Cape Verdian teenage boy appears to be the result of a Pentecostal exorcism. To add to the mystery, he may have belonged to a neighborhood skater gang. All evidence leads Rizzoli to suspect both his pastor and the skater gang in his death. Meanwhile, Jane's mother sets her up on a date with Lt. Grant. When Jane and Maura are called in on the case of a dead woman in an alley, Jane and Frost both talk about investigating the husband, but Maura finds that the victim is a lesbian and married to a woman. Jane finds it suspicious and inconsistent that she was raped with a foreign object and murdered after she was already dead. To complicate things, the victim was a diabetic who had an insulin pump and kept meticulous records of her food intake and insulin levels. The victim also had a club stamp on her hand, "Merch", from a lesbian bar. Frost & Rizzoli talk to the owner of the club who believes the victim was murdered by an organized nationwide anti-gay and anti-gay marriage hate group and show them the threatening flyers the club has received. (Massachusetts recognizes gay marriage.) Rizzoli intends to pursue the murder as a hate crime, but mounting evidence points elsewhere.
