About this deal

The cottage witch typically possesses a wide range of magical domestic skills. Crafty and resourceful, she expertly transforms scraps of fabric into spell poppets and knows her way around kitchen witchery.

Whatever label I would choose, I am and have been for a long time, a Hearth Witch or Kitchen Witch or Domestic Witch. It’s something that just happened naturally – I never actually chose to infuse magic into my domesticity, it is something that I just did without thinking about it. I could deny the witch label all I wanted and still it is what I was and am. A folk witch practices folk magic passed down through their family or through their local community. They often focus on the history and origin of a practice and may work with plants and objects that are native to their location. Baby Witch Although I had never heard of Hearth witchery when I was child, if I had, I could have told you straight up that I could and would never be such a thing. As a child and early teen I went through a long stage of rampant derision for female stereotypes. I was adamant I would never cook or clean or have children or wear dresses or any of that because that is what stereotypes expect of women. At least once a month, perhaps during the full or new moon, make a point to create a bath of indulgence and rejuvenation. Light candles, play music, anoint the body with essential oil blends and relax. We should probably begin with this most obvious of questions – what is Hearth Witchery? I think it’s probably easy enough to guess. The hearth being, once upon a time, the centre of the home, makes Hearth Witchery the witchcraft that revolves around the home. It is very similar, and in some cases identical to, Kitchen Witchery or Domestic Witchcraft.

It’s often super simple in nature though, it doesn’t require elaborate spells and incantations. A lot of it is seemingly incidental and, on the surface, extraordinarily mundane. It’s when your mixing spoon is your wand, your broom is your staff (and sword), your carving knife is an athame (or boline probably). It’s an art of adaptation and making things up as you go along. It’s a natural sort of magic, rather than a formal one. But it’s no less effective for all that. I Could Never be a Hearth Witch The Hearth Witch combines the energies of the Green Witch and Kitchen Witch guided by the magic of the home. As anyone who’s had a baby knows, life gets suddenly quite mundane. Housekeeping becomes everything. Besides caring for an infant, there’s constant laundry, cooking, cleaning, and endless chores to stay afloat. Similar to poppets, spell sachets are sachets stuffed with herbs, stones and other spell ingredients to draw a certain energy into your home or personal space. Firstly, I feel that the word chores can bring up really bleh feelings, so why don’t we change them to housekeeping rituals?

Painting your door a deep or brilliant shade of purple serves as a symbol that magic lies behind the threshold. In our housekeeping rituals, we keep in mind our goal- To create a sanctuary, a sacred space, a dwelling for the divine- which nourishes us and our loved ones. Start with a family recipe handed down to you. Research the metaphysical meanings in each of the key ingredients and see if you can translate it into your spell work. Make your bathroom a center of sacredness. My path to Hearthcraft was a reluctant one, at first. In my early twenties I started to identify as a Witch but wasn’t quite sure what type of Witch I was yet, as this takes time and experimentation to discover. I never would have thought at the time that being a Hearth Witch would appeal to me, as I wasn’t the most domestic person, nor did it sound very exciting!
