What’s surprising about this book is the laidback pace, in comparison to something like Killing Moon which moved fast as there was a set deadline to solve the case in that work. Picked up from the airport by Andrew Kensington Harry is thrust into Australian culture rather quickly.The Bat is a worthy introduction to Scandinavian noir for the uninitiated, even if this first Harry Hole novel is set in Australia. The first bit of the novel is a philosophical travelogue as Hole visits establishments and small towns with connections to the deceased and, to be frank, isn’t given much to do.
