About this deal

Nighttime sequences in the barracks and in the 2nd half of the film have a cold, steely blue palette that looks like hell has frozen over into a bland, icy landscape. Joker tries to keep Pyle in line, but his slowness and lack of physical stamina provide him with a world of verbal and mental abuse.

Later on, after boot camp, Joker will serve during Vietnam and despite working as a journalist will see his share of some action. Private Joker is a great character and his story is as engrossing now as it ever was… maybe better still by this gorgeous new 4K release. For the most part though, this is a very good remaster and certainly one that presents the film looking better than ever before. The encounters between Hartman and his men – especially the overweight misfit, nicknamed Gomer Pyle is tough to watch. Surround Sound Presentation: Surrounds are working mostly for echo at first… Hartman’s voice is commanding in the front AND the rears.

presentation seems like a fair compromise that the director would have likely approved; after all, 1. Lockhart” ( John Terry), his cameraman “Rafterman” ( Kevyn Major Howard), as well as some other troops like “Animal Mother” ( Adam Baldwin), “Eightball” ( Dorian Harewood), “Lt. As you can tell from the comparisons above, still images or the slideshow, there’s a very tasty amount of film grain now visible that has been preserved, some scenes received a bit more color changes than others (namely the last still image further above). Kubrick remains on point throughout the piece, however, when it comes to some exquisite cinematography, perfectly framing his shots, and capturing both the claustrophobia and the scale of the battle, as well as the sheer geometry involved in some of the conflicts. Details and clarity are on par with a new film, with textures, colors, foreground, background, and facial highlights all coming off just beautifully!

Hartmann's performance and the recruits' reactions as convincing as possible, Matthew Modine, Vincent D'Onofrio, and the other actors playing recruits never met R. Kubrick would be utterly in his element during this first half, nailing the performances and dialogue, with his Vietnam-based second half much more traditional in its depiction of soldiers scrambling around the battlefront desperately trying to stay in one piece, only coming alive for its final act amidst the atypical setting of a wartorn city. First off, Full Metal Jacket isn't exactly a visually colorful film, filled with bright shining primary colors that looks like a pop music video. Kubrick had dealt with war movies before, but only in black and white, and whilst neither the clinical, almost prison-like training facilities, nor the shell-ridden, wartorn battlefronts particularly lend themselves to his trademark, visually opulent, style, the director's guiding hand remains evident on every single shot here, and even more so with this gorgeously HDR graded native 4K presentation.
