Before The Matrix, before Star Wars, before Ender’s Game and Neuromancer, there was Dune: winner of the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards, and widely considered one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written. In 2017 the matching edition of Dune Messiah arrived, but it looked like the project had stalled because there were no dates for the rest. TLDR I'd recommend anyone who cares about quality and attention to detail to steer clear of the Hodder Publishing version of Dune. On the point of death, they are rescued by a band for Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, who control Arrakis’ second great resource: the giant worms that burrow beneath the burning desert sands. The goods do not need to be in their original packaging however in a sellable condition, and at your own cost and risk. I'm not a huge sic-fi reader but I love the universe that Herbert has created with all of the imaginative species and traits. It would be two decades after Dune was published that the electronic dance culture and ecstasy would become popular in Western society. He is to hold his right hand in a box that causes extreme pain; if he pulls back he will be killed by “the gom jabbar [which] kills only animals”. Dune is a deep and complex novel that takes in ecology, environmentalism, religion and the misuse of power and destiny.

His first SF story was published in 1952 but he achieved fame more than ten years later with the publication in Analog of 'Dune World' and 'The Prophet of Dune' that were amalgamated in the novel Dune in 1965. It won great acclaim, as well as the Hugo and Nebula awards, establishing Frank Herbert as a master of modern science fiction.

More elaborate and complex than preceding SF, Frank Herbert laid the foundations that made Star Wars and Babylon 5 possible. I haven't yet got the courage to read the third from fear of other reviews i should probably ignore. As Paul’s friends become worshippers and his family become idols, the thin line between god, liberator and oppressor is increasingly indistinct.

While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of melange, or "the spice," a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. As a reader, you get a front row seat to all the planning and counterplanning through the characters’ internal monologues – a nice reversal of the classic Conan Doyle stories which keep readers in the dark about the master detective’s reasonings until the very end. Whether you liked Dune or not (not many people said not) it is the conclusion to Dune as the author wanted it and should be read as part of Dune. To mark Folio’s 75th anniversary, Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story is published as a magical new edition, beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Marie-Alice Harel and bursting with exquisite design details.

The story is set more than 20,000 years in the future, the human race has spread across multiple worlds and are ruled by feudal royal houses. Melange, or 'spice', is the most valuable - and rarest - element in the universe; a drug that does everything from increasing a person's life-span to making intersteller travel possible. And it is across its vast expanses and in its arid caves that Frank Herbert’s epic adventure of political subterfuge and messianic deliverance is played out, a story that has become the best-selling science-fiction novel of all time, and is considered by many to be the genre’s greatest work. With the first Dune movie coming out next year (supposedly) I think the book will probably see a surge in sales, hopefully this at least stops someone from purchasing the Hodder Publishing version of Dune. The threat of Atomics looms between factions, held in check only by thin agreements which may be broken on a whim should the direction of the political wind change. The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice. The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo.
