About this deal

The big issue is the labor involved in sending the files to a printer then mounting and cutting them. The Chessex Battlemat is a “expanded” (i guess they mean stretched) vinyl mat with 1″ Squares on one side and 1′ Hexes on the reverse side.

And now I've discovered that the whole battlemat curves up off the table in a neat-o arch style reminiscent of the Roman Aqueducts. This is mostly a vent, but suggestions for how to banish this red is welcomed, as are alternative product suggestions. Test them out on a corner and let the ibk stay for a couple days and then try and erase and see how it goes. I actually went into Microsoft Excel (though any spreadsheet software should work) and built a huge grid of 1 inch squares and used the calculation functions to auto-print coordinates at the bottom-right of each square. It will take a couple of days, but like the others have mentioned use weight to flatten out the mat. They are very durable - they'll stand up to a lot of wear, and as long as you roll them properly, they unroll and flatten out easily. That said: All polymer materials are at least a little porous, so they can get stained if the marker is left on too long, regardless of what kind of marker you use.

Even with the above warnings, I've had chessex mats that have lasted for DECADES and I'd STILL be using one that was about 25 years old if I hadn't lost it somewhere in moving, it had a little faint red starburst on it that was fading over time which had been drawn to show a campfire. Daniel Thrace wrote: Ah yes, my friend the other DM advised that regardless of what you use, if for some reason it is really stuck on there you can use cheap beer as a cleaner and it works very well. ONE OF THE BEST RPG MATS ON THE MARKET - This dry erase battle grid map is double sided, affordable and long lasting.I have used mine for more than 2 years to-date, the whiteboard's thickness means it won't easily break unless you karate chop it down the middle. I find isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol works pretty well to remove most stains, (although the dry erase is still faintly there). If you really want glass, contact your local glass companies to see what they recommend, with the best safety features. It will save you a large amount of time when you have a fairly good idea of where players are likely to go in terms of locations.

Yeah, I also read somewhere else that the vinyl in the older Battlemats holds its form better than in the newer ones. My understanding is that the imperfections are all of this kind of magnitude, but I can’t say that for certain. One other idea I have employed is to get large, one-inch grid paper sheets for easels, usually 24”x36” or more, and draw out maps ahead of time on individual sheets of paper. They do have some ghosting problems, especially with red, purple, and brown (which leaves sickly green marks, interestingly). It’s definitely a solid option and I think it fits most of your preferences, except you have to draw twrrain yourself. Heavy books might cause the cover to crack or tear and laptops put out enough heat in most cases that it can seriously weaken the stability of the cover.
