Yeah, I also read somewhere else that the vinyl in the older Battlemats holds its form better than in the newer ones. My understanding is that the imperfections are all of this kind of magnitude, but I can’t say that for certain. One other idea I have employed is to get large, one-inch grid paper sheets for easels, usually 24”x36” or more, and draw out maps ahead of time on individual sheets of paper.They do have some ghosting problems, especially with red, purple, and brown (which leaves sickly green marks, interestingly). It’s definitely a solid option and I think it fits most of your preferences, except you have to draw twrrain yourself. Heavy books might cause the cover to crack or tear and laptops put out enough heat in most cases that it can seriously weaken the stability of the cover.
