About this deal

A Month in the Country is a celebration of brokenness — not the suffering of brokenness but, rather, the vulnerability that brokenness brings. Only after several months it was found that Channel 4 still owned the rights, and the film was eventually released on a limited-edition Region 2 DVD in late 2004. With the peaceful and idyllic countryside setting providing a backdrop as he slowly finds solace and meaning amidst the ruins of his past.

Several members of the local community were used as extras in the film, and local children were recruited by the director to collect butterflies to be released out-of-shot to create a "summer feeling". Fine book in original acetate protector covering green cloth cover and paper spine spine and title labels. Quickly grabbing it, paying for it, and nestling it into my bag, I scurried home intending to read it there and then. Short enough to allow for a quick reading, this economical work doesn't lack depth in any way; the characters are really funny and serious, being very easy to empathize with them in their joy and their sadness. Birkin gets himself quite deeply involved in the local community, in particular making friends with the Ellerbeck family, stalwarts of local Methodism. At the same time, Charles Moon - a fellow damaged survivor of the war - has been asked to locate the grave of a village ancestor. Reckoned by Penelope Fitzgerald to be his "masterpiece", A Month In The Country was initially published by The Harvester Press in 1980. The churchyard had several gravestones added, including the large box tomb which is a focus of several scenes.

Moon is employed in the village under the same bequest, working to uncover a mysterious lost grave, but is more interested in discovering the remains of an earlier Saxon church building in the field next to the churchyard. Then as he peels back the layers of plaster, dirt and time, revealing magnificent medieval mural, he also feels that he is carefully re-emerging from his trauma. No book evokes so well as this the long vistas of that high ridge of North Yorkshire between Thirsk and Sutton Bank.
