About this deal

Features Enhanced SpeedStep technology, Hyper-Threading Technology, Execute Disable Bit capability, Intel Virtualization Technology, Intel 64 Technology, streaming SIMD extensions 4. Functionality, performance, and other benefits of this feature may vary depending on system configuration. The 13th Gen Intel® Core™ processor family offers faster P-cores and more E-cores with support for DDR4/DDR5 and PCIe 4. Despite Ryzen's impressive performance, the chips have been plagued by high B-series motherboard pricing and Ryzen's strict requirement for DDR5 memory, both of which lead to higher platform costs. In fact, the Core i5-13400 with DDR4 is faster than the Core i5-12600K, which is tested with DDR5 memory.

There isn't too much to say about overclocking — Intel doesn't allow overclocking the 13400's CPU cores, and a workaround created by the motherboard vendors for the previous-gen chips doe sn't work with the new Raptor Lake models. Although both processors feature the same Golden Cove p-cores, the 13400F has four additional energy efficient e-cores which account for the improvement in multi-core performance. Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® Technology builds upon that architecture using design strategies such as Separation between Voltage and Frequency Changes, and Clock Partitioning and Recovery. As before, the LGA 1700 chip is compatible with 600-series motherboards, and because the chip has a locked multiplier (no overclocking), the B- and H-series motherboards make the most sense for this class of chip. The Intel Core i5-13400 therefore offers 6 P-cores and 4 E-cores, which can process a total of up to 16 threads in parallel.

The Core i5-13400 does suck more power than the Ryzen 5 7600, but it is reasonable, which helps reduce heat output. This time we used the same three test configurations — the 280mm watercooler without power limits, the box fan without power limits (and its original pre-applied TIM), and the box fan with power limits — to measure performance in heavier work. Processor numbers differentiate features within each processor family, not across different processor families. If this really is the case, then it opens up the possibility for Intel to harvest older-generation 8P+8E "Alder Lake" silicon to carve out mid-tier products in the 13th Generation, which is what the Core i5-13400F from this review appears to be, at least specs-wise. The Raptor Lake processors have a vastly improved voltage/frequency curve compared to Alder Lake, making them more efficient, and a special microcontroller unit (MCU) firmware that imparts caching and prefetching advantages ( deep dive here). Intel classifications are for general, educational and planning purposes only and consist of Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCN) and Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) numbers. All configurations of the Core i5-13400 match the Ryzen 5 7600 in single-threaded work, but overclocking the 7600 gives it a 4.
