About this deal

This is the first time we see her and I have nothing but fond memories of the woman she reveals herself to be later. Drum Billet is a wizard and about to die and needs to pass on his wizarding staff to a suitable successor: the eighth son of an eighth son. I was quite surprised that there was so much world-building and we only got to Ankh Morpork and the UU so late in the book because that didn't leave much room for the final problem to arise and then get sorted out, but it turns out that is was just the right amount of everything, mixed together perfectly for the optimal outcome. it is well known that a vital ingredient of success is not knowing that what you're attempting can't be done.

Yet to hear a Disc World book that isn't just immense and these new readings are vastly superior to the already entertaining originals. The extreme cold there causes the staff, now washed out to sea, to create a huge ice sheet, causing a storm that floods the university as well as the surrounding city. Executive Summary: Not as funny or as quotable as The Light Fantastic, but very enjoyable for other reasons. Giggle, I am just thinking about getting some six packs, self distilled booze ( I hope I don´t get temporarily blind again), the guns and the boys to shoot at whatever we find out in the woods, who cares about, yolo. A central theme of this book (also found in many of the other Discworld witch novels) is the contrast between, on one side the (female) witches or wiccans, who are in touch with nature, herbs and headology, and on the other side the (male) wizards who are very ceremonial and use elaborate, mathematics-like tools and rituals.Like Wyrd Sisters, this is equally 'spell binding' with its brilliant plots, excellent presentation and just addictive. The Necrotelicomnicom is another reference to the Phonebook of the Dead (see the annotation for the dedication of Equal Rites), but is also a pun on the evil book of the dead Necronomicon, used by H. She went from “this is how it has always been, so we’re going to follow tradition” to “why does it have to be this way? Ordinary minds are just vague to them, they hardly bother with them, but a mind with magic in it shines out, you see, it’s a beacon to them. Granny Weatherwax does what she can for the young woman, but Eskarina does the heavy lifting, always asking, “Where is it written?

Indira Varma does not, in any way, differentiate between the voices of all the different characters, or even the voices of the characters and the voice of the narrator. Pratchett packs his tale with fantasy tropes including a spectacular magical duel and a few Lovecraftian references. I've read that she changes quite a bit in the Wyrd Sisters and beyond, but I'm glad I can see how she started out before I jump into that. Her experiences while trying to get to the Unseen University make Esk doubt whether it is possible for a girl to step into the wizardry world, which is a man’s land. It doesn't have the huge laugh out loud moments that later discworld books have, in part because Pratchett was still finding himself as an author at this stage -- but it's a good addition to the Discworld universe and serves as a solid starting point for the Witches line of Discworld books.

Said duel (usually between a man and a woman, and often with nice Freudian touches to the things they turn into) has a much longer history; folkies out there will probably know it as the song 'The Two Magicians'. It's a heart-warming book focusing on the Man Jobs and Women Jobs of the Discworld-and indeed our own. This line comes from the old Irish folk song popularized by Fairport Convention and also recorded by countless other artists from Van Morrison and the Chieftains, to Annie Briggs, to Loreena McKennitt.
