About this deal

Immerse yourself in these culinary treasures, crafted to elevate your dishes with the rich and earthy essence of wild mushrooms. When it comes to carrying a comprehensive book in your rucksack, this pocket-sized guide is second to none. This book is well written and comprehensive, and is a must-have resource for those interested in the topic.

Obey any local rules on how many you can pick and try to leave some for others to admire, don’t ‘vacuum’ the woods of everything you see. The book also features a handy similar-species description, letting you know similar mushrooms that may or may not be poisonous! Behind this comprehensive guide is Stefan Buczacki, one of the top mycologists and horticultural scientists in Europe.

The detailed, desk-reference-ness of the book is undeniable and especially valuable since it is written clearly and not in scientific myco-lese terminology. It is an excellent little guide for beginner foragers who are looking for the top edible mushrooms in Maine and want to know how to prepare them. The book, it’s notes and references in the back have given me a greater insight into the life and symbiosis of fungi.

If you read this book cover to cover, you would learn more than you could ever want to know about wild mushrooms.

It arrived safe and sound in it's biodegradable packaging (nice touch) and is gorgeously designed and illustrated all the way through. It is the Author’s hope that this little book with its colour chart will be used on forays and at home constantly. There are some downsides though- this book doesn’t have “dichotomous keys” meaning it can be hard to nail down the exact species of mushrooms that you find only using this book. It’s far quicker and more helpful to identify the mushroom if you provide detailed photos of the top, side, gills, and maybe even a cross-section cut as well as where and when it was found.

That being said, this book is an absolute gem with tons of amazing information written in a style that is both informative and entertaining. This hobby can be both recreational and educational, as it allows individuals to explore nature, learn about different mushroom species, and appreciate the diverse ecosystems in which mushrooms thrive. It’s an engaging read, taking the reader through the various uses we’ve found for the organisms, and where they might take us in the future. If you find yourself captivated by the mystique of the forest floor, intrigued by the myriad shapes and colours that fungi can take, and eager to embark on the rewarding journey of mushroom foraging, you've arrived at the perfect destination. If you’re interested in fungi and its place within the ecosystem, add this title to your reading list.Respected foragers rely on this Mushroom Encyclopaedia as their go-to guide for fungi identification at home. Inside, you’ll find countless pictures of both fully grown and young fungi by notable mycological illustrators Chris Shields and Denys Ovenden. The Wild Food UK Mushroom Foraging Guide has 352 pages covering over 160 different mushrooms species that grow wild in the UK. It goes deep into the ways that mushrooms are grown commercially all over the world, some of the major trends in mushroom cultivation, and ways that mushroom growers are overcoming problems and becoming more efficient.

It also rarely uses common names, which leads to issues finding the fungi if all you have is a common name from another book or guide or an old or new scientific name. It has really reignited the conversation and brought the attention of this super interesting topic to the broader public. Whether you are interested in mushroom foraging, identification, cultivation, or cooking, there is a mushroom book out there for you. With its exceptional pictures, precise descriptions, and comprehensive edibility notes, it ticks all the boxes for me. Entangled Life was a New York Times Best Seller and won several book awards in 2021 when it was published.
