Sunset Song is the first book of the trilogy A Scots Quair and widely regarded as one of the most important Scottish novels of the 20th century. I felt he gave a rather unfair view of people’s attitude to it, though not an unrecognisable one in Scotland even today.

There is the other bridge between them, of course, which is Chris's personal tragedy--not personal at all, because it's the tragedy of Scotland, and not tragic at all, because both Chris and Scotland continue on, having changed irrevocably and not at all. It is in this atmosphere that the rather visionary Robert will try to inspire his new flock and Chris will dutifully observe the Church’s practices while making little effort to pretend that she believes in Robert’s God. Through him, we see the increasing Englishing of the language and culture – a theme also central to Sunset Song. Dead, still and quiet, not even a body, powder and dust he with whom she had planned her life and her days in the times to be.Aunque hayamos dejado atrás Kinraddie, en este libro conocemos por primera vez el pueblo de Segget y a sus habitantes. One of the reasons I'm reading these more individually and less as a trilogy these days is because I've tended to treat them as a unit in the past, which I think somewhat diminishes the power they have as individual novels. Some might find the many Scots words offputting, but I liked the language even though many of the words were unfamiliar. No lo he disfrutado tanto como Canción del ocaso (hubiese sido imposible) porque se centra demasiado en la vida de los habitantes de Segget y a mí quien me interesa es Chris. Featured here are the BBC Radio dramatisations of the first two novels, as well as a special documentary feature exploring the landscape and legacy of Sunset Song.

Cloud Howe offers a brilliant evocation of small town life set against post-war economic hardship and the General Strike of 1926.

But sadly, this book is less a continuation of Chris's story in the next phase of her life as it is ho-hum crappy politics and propaganda.

In Sunset Song the themes were hinted at by the chapters' titles and were based on agricultural terms whereas in Cloud Howe they were based on cloud types. In “Cloud Howe”, as the minister’s wife, Chris learns to love again, and we witness the cruel gossip and high comedy of small village life until, once again, Chris suffers a terrible loss. In this second part of the trilogy, Chris has now married the local minister and is finding her feet in her new role, despite her misgivings and no apparent faith of her own, apart from her devotion to the landscape she has worked and known so well all her life. Now married to Robert, a young and idealistic minister, Chris and her family move from the crofting village of Kinraddie to the mill town of Segget in Aberdeenshire. But Sunset Song works perfectly as a standalone, and really didn’t need a follow-up in my opinion, so keep that one on your list!Montrose, with clean sandy beaches, golf courses and leisure activities is just 13 miles away and it is easy to access the Angus Glens from here. A huge fluffy white cloud floats in the beautiful blue sky above blue seas with waves that lap on the rocks on the shoreline. Chris Guthrie, the female protagonist, is a strong character who grows up in a dysfunctional farming family. And she peered in his face in the light that came, his hair lay fair on the pillow’s fringe, fair almost to whiteness, his skin ivory-white, she saw his brows set dark in a dream, and the mouth came set in a straight line below, she liked his mouth and his chin as well, and his ears that were small and lay flat back, so, and the hand that had tightened again in his sleep – oh!

I knew that the other two aren’t usually considered as good as Sunset Song, but I was still disappointed.Ser joven como nunca lo habías sido, pues te habías visto atrapada y machacada por las ruedas de los días; en este pequeño valle adusto con sus fatigas y sinsabores cuántas cosas te habías perdido, ¡cuántas! Grey Granite focuses on her son Ewan and his passionate involvement with justice for the common man. In Cloud Howe, as the minister’s wife, Chris learns to love again, and we witness the cruel gossip and high comedy of small village life until, once again, Chris suffers a terrible loss.
