This release comes on the eve of Halloween, so I gave it a spin to review and had fun reliving the film. Joe Dante's cult classic celebrates its 35th Anniversary wreaking havoc on Ultra HD with a gorgeous 4K HDR10 presentation, delivering a marked improvement over its Blu-ray counterpart, but the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is not all that much of a step up over the Dolby TrueHD version. Audio is also available in French, German, Italian, Castilian Spanish, Latin Spanish, Czech voice-over, Hungarian, and Russian 5. The presentation is very pleasing overall—certainly this is best this film has ever looked—though given that most of the action takes place at night, it seldom gets the chance to really dazzle.

Despite all the obvious inspiration, however, Gizmo and Stripe remain unique contributions to popular culture, hybrid creatures merged from a strange brew of World War II in-jokes, old movie references and anxieties, not to mention the distinctive vocal chops of Welker and Howie Mandel. Oddly enough, Spielberg did not consider it a horror film or a spoof when talking about it on this special feature from the 80’s. Both readings are there if you want to see them, and it’s notable that the Gremlins’ primary storyline victims are an evil predatory capitalist and the aforementioned mildly bigoted Futterman (whose death later got retconned away in the sequel, which features a Donald Trump parody).The triple-layered UHD100 disc sits comfortably opposite a Region Free, BD50 disc, and both are housed inside a black, eco-cutout case with a shiny, glossy slipcover. So why hasn’t the studio (based on all available evidence) managed to maintain a pristine-looking master print of the thing? There's not alot to say about the exterior shots except that only as much as you need to see of the outside is shown.

Whether from the fireplace or the lighting in Dorry's Tavern, several scenes come with a warmer and more vibrant reddish-orange blush, but the Futterman house has a weightier, more solemn yellow glow, which oddly suits Mr.

The ample extras are all holdovers from the Blu-ray, but it’s always a plus when the commentaries get ported over to the actual 4K disc, as they have here. Imagine John Candy’s Del Griffith from Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987), but selling whacked out shower caddies for the on-the-go guy as opposed to shower curtains. As a result, devilish green creatures with a million vices take over the small town on Christmas Eve.

Still, it would have really been nice to have seen some new extras produced for this, considering it is celebrating its 35th anniversary. While it does not thrill quite like it did upon my first viewings as a kid, Joe Dante's Gremlins remains an enjoyable, madcap romp, with fun practical effects and gleefully rude humor.
