The sounds and alternative spelling are introduced in the context of Oxford Reading Tree scenes, packed with activities for practice and consolidation. In 2008, Roderick Hunt received an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to education, particularly literacy. This handbook is a guide to Floppy’s Phonics – a rigorous, easy-to-use synthetic phonics teaching programme that engages children from the outset and enables them to learn to read quickly.

Floppy’s Phonics is in line with the Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) teaching principles described in the ‘English programmes of study: key stages 1 and 2 – National curriculum in England’ which is statutory from September 2014. The official pass mark has not been released for the 2022 check yet; however, in 2021, this was 32 out of 40. Floppy’s Phonics engages the children with its familiar characters and supports both teaching and learning with CD-ROMs; classroom visual aids, the structured set of phonics books; cumulative, decodable, activity sheets and texts, plus planning and assessment materials. Floppy’s Phonics Sounds and Letters is a beautifully crafted programme for learners aged 4-7 that is both systematic and rigorous. This programme is a content-rich systematic synthetic phonics programme that allows for a two-pronged approach to teaching phonics. This enables them to check on their own accuracy as well as taking responsibility for their own learning. The final set of 12 books in the Floppy’s Phonics Sounds and Letters series revisits phonemes and graphemes learned in Phases 1-4, whilst introducing new phonemes with a strong focus on groups of alternative spellings, such as, ai, ay, eigh, ey, a-e (including split digraphs). Roderick Hunt and Alex Brychta: Author and illustrator team, Roderick Hunt and Alex Brychta, are two of the most experienced and successful reading scheme creators in the world.

Floppy's Phonics is one of the DfE's validated systematic synthetic phonics programmes – a structured and rigorous programme, with a step-by-step approach using familiar characters and aiming to deliver early reading and writing success. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills. Perfectly matched to Letters and Sounds’ progression and phases, Floppy’s Phonics Sounds and Letters provides step by step learning, as well as built-in practice and revision, to deliver synthetic phonics.
