Like the new Start Collecting: Chaos Space Marines box, it’s a bit hard to evaluate this one effectively because it’s currently the only place to get Suppressors, which are an insanely good unit for Iron Hands and, to a lesser extent, Imperial Fists armies.

The rules for the Alpha Legion tend to favor versatility and subterfuge, and they have several rules that can apply to Cultists by virtue of just being INFANTRY-keyworded, though you may find they don’t necessarily want to run a ton of cultists. It comes with a Master of Possession, 10 Chaos Marines, a Venomcrawler, 2 Possessed, and 2 Obliterators. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It’s probably worth noting that none-Wolves players can still get some usage out of this box, although the Battle Leader is fairly markedly Space Wolves so you might struggle. Finally if you want to bring anything from the Forge World library of Chaos models, such as the Kytan Ravager, Blood Slaughterer of Khorne, or the Hellforged dreadnoughts, you need this book.Thanks to the army’s trait, they want to be up close and taking out enemies at a short range to get those +1 to hit bonuses, then charge in and finish the target off. As a Starting Thousand Sons player, you want all of these models in your army, and the savings on this box are pretty great. It’s a much better balanced box than that one, too, with potentially two squads of Deathwatch Veterans as Troops and a Venerable Dreadnought included, which are always useful. Our fantasy figure range consists of Goblins, Dwarves, bits, bobs and things that go bump in the night.

If money is an object, then there are a few things you can use as proxies – Necromunda Cawdor models work well here, as do traitor guardsmen from Blackstone Fortress. Tactical Marines just don’t have much value when you’d rather run Scouts or Intercessors, the Terminator Captain doesn’t bring much to the table when you have other, more mobile, better-equipped, cheaper options, and the Venerable Dreadnought is only OK. If you need another squad to meet detachment requirements then this is perfect as you can make 2 squads out of this one box.Also thanks to Goonhammer reader Ian Donovan for pointing out that, in a pinch, you can build your Thunderwolf Cavalry as Wolf Lords or Battle Leaders on Thunderwolves, giving you 3 more HQs in the box to play with (and enough Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields to go around), giving it some versatiliy. Once you’ve got that, you’ll almost certainly jettison the Helbrute at some point and look at better options like another Venomcrawler or a Vindicator. likewise, the World Eaters are in transition to getting their own army at some point in the next year, and currently rules for the faction’s unique units can be found in White Dwarf 477. You’re going to need at least one Lord Discordant, a Master of Possession, 1-3 units of Cultists, several boxes of Chosen and Possessed, and likely 10 Terminators.
