About this deal

Very much not where I expected this to end up — having very much enjoyed the fun yarn and witty writing, I hadn’t realised the book was actually gonna be this well thought-through. I'd like to extend a huge thank you to NetGalley for providing a copy of Bored Gay Werewolf in exchange for an honest review. Tyler has got a plan and he wants Brian to be part of it, and weirdly his brand of self-help punditry actually encourages Brian to shape up and to stop accidently marking out bad tippers at the restaurant as potential monthly victims.

Brian attempts to make some other new friends over the course of the book, and these characters present a chilling insight into millennial straight culture and toxic masculinity. Especially when a problem gets dropped into your lap and changes your life, and you’re not given a manual or any help, you’re just supposed to figure it out. Bored Gay Werewolf is very much about finding your pack and embracing the people who embrace you for who you are, rather than changing yourself to fit in with people you don’t even want to fit in with in the first place. He's been struggling to manage his transition to adulthood almost as much as his monthly transitions to a werewolf. But Brian is also a werewolf and not remembering eating a jogger the previous night is probably a good thing.

He’s been struggling to manage his transition to adulthood almost as much as his monthly transitions to a werewolf. I had the pleasure of reading this captivating book in May 2023, spending almost an entire day engrossed in its pages. I really liked his friendship with Nik and Darby – Brian doesn’t give much back but they are a constant source of support and love and they were great! The narrative, told using Third-person perspective following Brian, spans 15 chapters and 253 pages. The witty banter between the characters is genuinely funny, and I loved Brian’s cynical, bemused, and indeed, bored, narration.

It feels that way in the beginning, but it touches on issues of wealth distribution, toxic masculinity, and classism, and immediately becomes not only a very fun read but a very relevant one as well.

The book's inclusion of popular TV shows and literature was a delightful addition that allowed us to explore and experience the references for ourselves.

Dramatic rights were sold by Marc Simonsson of SoloSon Media Limited on behalf of Atlantic at auction to a major Emmy-winning TV production company. He doesn’t really have a plan of how to live his life as a werewolf, drinking heavily and often waking up in a forest with blood on his face and he knows he has killed at least a couple of people. Cuz it’s not doing “werewolf” good and besides that it’s kind of just a boring story about some dude who needs to get his shit together? Bored Gay Werewolf is a novel about an aimless guy who happens to be a werewolf and what happens when he meets someone trying to create what seems to be a start-up for werewolves. I love books that integrate some kind of mythological creature into an everyday modern world and this one is a pretty funny way of doing it, exploring toxic masculinity within hustle culture and within ideas of werewolves at once (and it's not just the name Tyler that offers hints of Fight Club). The reading experience was thoroughly enjoyable, and the flaws don't significantly impact my overall appreciation of it. Bored Gay Werewolf sees a directionless college-dropout deal with minimum-wage jobs, lunar cycles, toxic masculinity and the everyday perils of life as a modern werewolf, and will be published in hardback, trade paperback and ebook in June 2023. Protagonist Brian is tackling all this while stuck in a dead-end restaurant job, too, leaving him exposed and volatile.
