About this deal

For the greatest obstacle to Effie’s happiness might well prove to be Lord Blackthorn's overwhelmingly good intentions. They take the time to get to know one another, they appreciate the flaws in each other, and they genuinely seem to like each other?

He has a very small moment in HALF A SOUL, where he talks to Dora about what makes someone virtuous, which sets him on his path in this book. It is fundamentally a romance, seen from the female protagonist’s angle, though not a sentimental or yucky one! It’s not usually a good idea to make a deal with a Faerie, but this particular faerie really seems to only have the very best of intentions… so Effie makes a wager with him, that with Lord Blackthorn’s help, she will make Mr. In a perfect example of "things everyone should surely know but I only found out late in life", I had no idea that Oranges and Lemons had a tune to go with it until my original audiobook narrator sang the song for me. When she told her second-grade history teacher that she wanted to work with history someday, she is fairly certain this isn’t what either party had in mind.As a housemaid, Effie has resigned herself to a life of invisibility, only noticeable to the very few for her fine embroidery work. Tasha Suri, author of The Jasmine Throne on Half a Soul'Smart and subversive, these charming romances will ignite your heart-and your hope' Shelley Parker-Chan, author of She Who Became the Sun 'Whimsical, witty, and brimming over with charm' India Holton, author of The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels on Half a Soul'Half a Soul is exactly the comfort read we all need. Their contrasting personalities complement each other well, and I like that both Effie and Lord Blackthorn grow and change as they learn more about themselves, their situations, the people around them, and each other.

Yes, his help leads to some disasters but he is too endearing to be very angry at, and I know Effie will agree with me. Just passed the halfway point and can feel the Sanderslanche starting - I have a feeling the rest of the book is going to go REAL quick. From the description, I thought we were heading down much more of a “Rumpelstiltskin” path with an impossible task, but that really wasn’t the case. Now, she has a hundred days— and ten thousand stitches - to make Mr Ashbrooke fall in love and propose. In the case of Olivia Atwater’s Ten Thousand Stitches, its those details that make it one of the more unexpectedly romantic retellings out there.Either commit to having the way she speaks be something integral to our experience of her as readers, or just tell us her accent changed and let us imagine it for ourselves. Her mind made up, nothing will stop her in her quest for love, not even Lord Blackthorns' insistent meddling. And there are a few references to Dora and Elias, but nothing that cannot be understood if you haven’t read the previous book. A Quick Note: TEN THOUSAND STITCHES is a standalone sequel; while some characters from HALF A SOUL make an appearance, it can be read on its own and still be enjoyed.

Loving the themes that prop up these books, love that we did get a little more worldbuilding (or at least a sense of why the faerie are in this world) as I wanted, and Mr. For instance, at one point, Effie is given a dress made of dignity; when she wears it, people treat her with grave respect and ask her counsel on a range of matters, for surely someone so dignified MUST have all the answers. Though I understood why, it didn’t make her the most likable protagonist when the story first began. I loooooooved the first one and I knew this didn’t follow the same couple but hoped it would still be as charming as the first. The kind-hearted faerie has become enamored with the idea of English virtue, and has been told that the way to attain English virtue is by helping the helpless and punishing the wicked. This site is primarily dedicated to books, particularly of the sci-fi and fantasy variety, but expect the occasional foray into other realms such as video games and television.

She tries her hardest to do her job but she is being worked nearly to death and so it’s hard not to want something better for her (and all the staff at Hartfield besides).Often his attempts to "help" go awry because he lacks understanding of the specific social and class pressures faced by a young woman working as a maid: and he has to deal with the fact that his inherent privilege often divorces his intentions from the effects of his actions. As the name suggests, Blackthorn is a vegetation heavy land that has its own plans for people, and is not above a few small but deft manipulations!
