About this deal

I did worry when we first started playing that it would start to feel old once we got used to the cards (although as it turns out that has not happened yet), so I was excited about expansion. It doesn’t quite adhere to the “rack ’em” rule that I use (in which I yell “rack ’em” at my coworker when he beats me in something and we play again), but it’s probably as close as you’re going to get for a game with its playtime footprint, which is cool. The base experience of It’s a Wonderful World is deceptively simple, because there is much more to explore in its tactical depths that might not seem obvious based on the light ruleset. The game itself is actually very basic, which leaves room for interesting decisions, but never overstays its welcome.

If you’re a fan of It’s a Wonderful World and you’re looking for a fun new experience that changes things up just enough to create new engagement while still embracing the game you know and love… this is probably for you. It seems like you only have so much time to do everything you want and you can’t seem to do it-a perfect feeling for this type of strategy game. The more you build, though, the more you’ll earn as you move through production steps to gain additional resources. Taking a cue from some of the great civilizations through history, we can see that when the need to work for preservation and the pursuit of progress fades and prosperity runs rampant, the population indulges in self and often collapses under itself. But, also, it was like the 10th board game I ever played in my life, so, I’ll always have a bit of a soft spot for it. Cards they want to build are put into construction by placing them next to the empire card Cards that they do not wish to keep are recycled, players collect the recycling bonus printed on the card (one of the five basic materials) and discard the card to the discard pile. There were moments where you could definitely see the need to “hate draft” cards so another player didn’t get them, and times when you were looking for things that hit combos well. Some are just okay, but the addition of player powers each round is quite enjoyable – if anything, I would have liked to see these refined into variable player powers that you could use after the campaign is over, instead.

Once you complete all 5 resources, the card upgrades earn you supremacy bonuses during production, recycling bonuses and eventually 15 victory points. Both are similar in structure – the box contains rules for a campaign of 5 games in which the winner of the final game is the winner of the campaign. Firstly, each card has a recycling value which will allow you to discard the card and then take one of the five basic resource types. The game has never had a strong theme, and the attempts to add flavor and story here are weak at best. You resolve resources one by one; materials (grey), energy (black), science (green), gold (yellow), and exploration (blue).
