About this deal

Well, if you played Arboretum, the great card game originally published by Z-Man Games but now published with breath-taking art by Renegade Games Studios, you might know a little bit of that feeling. That’s a dreadful idea though, because it’s like bailing out a ship – by the time you’ve thrown out a glassful of water, another two have poured in. There is great strategy available here and the decisions of what to play and what to hold has massive implications not just for you but your opponents. That’s where my brain usually goes into lock-up; I’m looking at the board, screaming internally for a way in which I can fix the mess my careless hands have wrought, and there’s nothing.

I'm happy to trumpet Everdell, in all its charm and glory, as the insurmountable favorite of my collection.Arboretum plays great at all player counts, although I think it is a bit more of a brain burner with just two players. It seemed strange at first, but we found that people spent more time deciding which cards to take from the discard/draw piles rather than playing their cards. You can find more of his work at Roll to Review, a one man blog that pumps out fortnightly board game reviews. You should be mindful of that before proposing that to someone, especially if they’re not much for mean games.

All players know all values of cards before the game starts, and the game won’t end until all cards have been drawn. There is enough wiggle room in this game that it needn’t be so stressful, but the game makes its weight known for half an hour.Score one additional point for each card in the path if the path consists of at least four cards and they are all the same color. The fact that they will sacrifice their own gains to deny yours is indeed the highest level of compliment at Casa Foe. It's filled to the brim with tough choices, and I was engaged from start to finish with puzzling out what I needed to keep, what I could safely get rid of, and what position would provide maximum comfort on the couch tonight. Paths of trees are what score you points, but you must win the right to score your paths over other players. Ideally, you want a good mix between cards for end scoring that match your tableau trees and cards that will prevent your opponent from scoring.

As long as the first and last card in that path are of the same species and the numbers continue in sequence, you can score.

It's very thinky and puzzly as you're trying to work out which cards to play at what time, which to keep in your hand for end scoring, and also keep an eye on your opponents tableau. And I fully agree with your assessment, with an added dose of irritation at memory and sequential maths. Their whole game, for just 0 points :D My girlfriend didn't like it as she doesn't want her plans go to waste totally due to an action by an opponent. You will be trying to make the option for someone to get rid of their 8 early as their least-worst option, or perhaps make it harder for someone to mine for their best option. When you’re drawing, you can take the top card of any discard pile (even your own) or the top card of the draw deck.

Once you do that, though, your opponent is going to sit on high-value cards of that type, so maybe don’t commit to a color unless you’ve got at least the 6 and the 7, already?I have had positive experiences with all Z-Man titles I have played, and this is by no means the exception. Because, if you remember, you need to discard cards on your turn, and players can pick up your discards. I should note before I get into the review proper that when I was taking photographs for this I didn’t realise until I actually cleared the last card away that I was playing a two-player example with a three player deck.
