BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,

In His first recorded sermon, Jesus gives some detail to the nature of His mission. He tells us why He came to earth. This sermon was delivered in the synagogue of Nazareth. Jesus stood to read in the synagogue, and read from Isaiah 61:1-2. It was from the Septuagint version, which was commonly read in the synagogues. Luke 4:16-21 records the scene for us. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Here, Jesus refers primarily to being downtrodden and bruised by others. We are broken by their oppression and, in a sense, are enslaved by them. What they have done to us captures us and our attention. We must be set free from the oppresssion and the oppressors. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. NASUThe spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Christ opened the eyes of the spiritually blind. Many came to faith in Him and followed Him. In addition He healed people who were physically blind. Thus, both literally and spiritually, this proclamation was fulfilled during the days of Christ on earth. However, it does not have to mean this, and there is no such event recorded in scripture. The record portrays Jesus as ascending into heaven alone (Acts 1:9-11).

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;THE spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me: he hath sent me to preach to the meek, to heal the contrite of heart, and to preach a release to the captives, and deliverance to them that are shut up. Jesus was concerned about the Kingdom of God and our membership in it. According to Mark 1:15, He already had declared (Mark 1:15) “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Sometimes the deliverance comes by a change of attitude in our own hearts. Jesus challenges us deeply with these words in Mt. 5:10-12:

The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me; because Jehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

IV. Set Free the Downtrodden

The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. This lines up with Paul’s teaching that Christ "was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures" (1Corinthians 15:4). Notice that Paul does not teach that Christ “descended into hell”. He says Christ "descended into the lower parts of the earth" (Ephesians 4:9). The descent that Paul has in mind is the fact that Christ died and was buried. Paul regards the statement in the Psalm (Psalms 68:18) as a prediction of the ascension ofChrist. Paul adds that this ascent to the highest heaven should be considered together with a prior descent into the lower parts of the earth. To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness. What is the captivity that Paul is thinking about when he quotes, "He led captivitycaptive and gave gifts to men" (verse 8)?
