About this deal

This was such a thought-provoking read. The author has woven the history of Hanan's family fleeing Somalia as refugees, the loss of their father who was murdered during their escape, their faith as Muslims and prejudice that they face, the financial struggle for Hanan's mother and pressure felt by the eldest son to provide for the family. I'd recommend this book to fans of The Hate U Give and I Am Thunder. I hope it brings change. Nasra looks at her with disdain and snorts. "Haven’t you heard? Love actually kills all. Look at what happened to Romeo and Juliet. Both too dumb in love to stay alive for it. And anyway, Lily, stop creeping on your best friend’s twin brother. You might as well claim you’re in love with this one, too, because they’re basically identical," she says, indicating me. I will never forget the day Daniel walked into the club. My stomach had dropped. It felt like I had lost one of the last places at Grafton that wasn’t toxic for me.

You Think You Know Me by Ayaan Mohamud - The School Reading List

I pursed my lips but didn’t say anything. I knew if Andrea had been there, she definitely would’ve gone off on her. She’s never been the type to let anything go, especially when it comes to Jessica and her snarkiness. But me? No, no, no. I stayed silent. I always stayed silent. It was easier that way. Easier to let these little jabs slide off you, like water over glass, than let any of it get to you. I really enjoyed this book it’s a strong 4.5 for me. I found the writing poetic in a way. Even in the saddest descriptions. Hanan has always been a ‘good girl’ accepting of her role as the school's perfect Muslim poster girl. She ignores the racist bullies, the comments and the jibes, she lives by her mother’s favourite saying “ A closed mouth is gold - it helps you get home in one piece’. But her friend is murdered and every Muslim is to blame, violence, hatred and blatant racism rear their ugly heads. It’s time for Hannah to make her voice heard and to challenge prejudice and to speak up against hate and fear. The Natural Health Service: What the Great Outdoors Can Do For Your Mind written and narrated by Isabel Hardman (Bolinda Audio) I loved the fact that she was a practicing Muslim which I think isn’t seen enough in books. She and her family are Somalis. I loved reading about their culture and seeing their family dynamics. A beautiful part of the book. This book has such wonderful Muslim rep, we see Hanan praying regularly and how she turns to Allah in times of good and bad. And just how her and her family live their life with Islam in every part of it. Author Luke Palmer introduces his new book, Play (Firefly Press) about four boys growing up together, the challenges, the friendships, and what hap... In the book, I mention this very well-known ayah that says, ‘Verily, with hardship comes ease.’ Every Muslim will tell you about it, but I genuinely think it’s true and with all that Hanan goes through, her story doesn’t end on a bad note. I think if you give life long enough, you will get there insha Allah . It may take some time, but you will get there insha Allah . And things got worse still when the class clown, Luke, decided he wanted to make me joke-of-the-week. He and his friends had followed Hussein and me at break one day and we hadn’t noticed until they were only a metre or two away. Hanan's speech was an appropriate response to this. Minorities owe society nothing in exchange for safety and accessible opportunities, we don’t need the responsibility of tolerating aggressors. Imagine my satisfaction when Hanan concluded “I don’t owe anything to any of you… The fact is my being doesn’t belong to any of you”. Also the part on issues with the idea of integration 👏🏽👏🏽 absolutely, Hanan.

The date in my planner glares at me. I’m four weeks away from my med school admissions test and I can feel its nearness starting to bite at my heels. But I know if I don’t turn up like I promised, my friends will have words for me, so I shove the planner in my bag and head out.Andrea had had her reservations when Lily first transitioned to our group. I remember just how much time and energy it took to convince her to give Lily the benefit of the doubt. What follows is a real mediation on grief, adolescence, finding your voice, but also owning your individuality when living in a world of unjust stereotypes. Wether the experience is linked to religion or not, this book has so much to relate to or confirm when it comes to marginalisation and villianising of the innocent. As Hanan stops staying quiet, the world of possibility opens up. Karen Napier, CEO of The Reading Agency, said: "We're hugely excited to celebrate World Book Night 2023 with such a fantastic team of Ambassadors who are helping us champion the power of reading. We're immensely grateful for the support from authors, publishers, libraries and giveaway organisations for helping people give the gift of reading this spring!"

I sigh. I’d been planning an afternoon in the library to study up on the physics that’ll be in my exam, but I guess that won’t be happening now. Cats: I just couldn't connect with it. The book had a few good points, but none that I like in a book. She’s always kept her mouth shut and ignored a lot of the bullying and discrimination she faces. But, she finds that she can’t really do that anymore, so the story is about her finding her voice. I see some of the others from my double maths lesson hanging around under the canopies and by the field outside. I don’t see Jessica though, which is good. I try to avoid Jessica as much as realistically possible in this school, even though we share a few classes. The story follows a 17 year old student Hanan Ali, who goes through a difficult situation after the death of her respected friend Michael Fleming. The murderer is declared by the police as a Muslim. That’s why Hanan and other Muslims students in the school are in a dangerous situation. Now Hanan, who remained silent despite the discriminations she had to suffer decides to raise her voice against this hatred. So well pitched at the target reader is this novel, that Mohamud can teach her young audience a lot - but equally they will get from this a sense of self, a sense of being seen, heard and recognition that this difficult era of life is surpassable. And how important that is to young people the world over... Isha gives her a side-eye as she draws out her favourite cherry blossom lip-gloss from her blazer, applying a generous amount. If she could have it her way, she’d be wearing full-face make-up every day for school, but she makes do with what she can get away with. I read this blurb and knew the book would hurt, and so it should. Reading this was tense because I came to care for Hanan. Her life had it's tough elements, then the things that happened around her and to her increased that difficulty ten fold. Hanan had a strong family but it was fraying in many ways.

You Think You Know Me by Ayaan Mohamud Book Review: You Think You Know Me by Ayaan Mohamud

The three of us smile at each other knowingly; Lily’s extravagant weekend trips happen at least once a month with her millionaire candle-creator mum, so we’re all used to them by now. Most people wonder what Lily’s doing at a place like this when they find out who her mum is, but it makes more sense when you know her mum went to Grafton thirty years ago too. Excuse you, I’m asking for support here, not judgement, Hanan, she replies drily, squinting at me. Those two are the ones you should be looking at.Powerfully poignant and heart-wrenchingly honest, Ayaan Mohamed’s stunning debut tells the story of one courageous teenage girl, Hanan and her experiences of bigotry and Islamophobia she and soo many other Muslims face —both at her prestigious London grammar school and within the wider local community. The MC, Hanan, is a quiet studious girl who has spent years at school being harassed and bullied and just did her best to ignore it. Impressive, Nasra says, smirking. We’re going to have to throw you a party when you finally hit a hundred. She smiles sheepishly. Sorry, sorry, she says. Do you guys know the kind of dedication and commitment it takes to run an established Jimin fan account? It’s basically a full-time job.
