About this deal

At first glance, Arnie looks like an average doughnut—round, cakey, with a hole in the middle, iced and sprinkled. He was made by one of the best bakeries in town, and admittedly his sprinkles are candy-colored. Still, a doughnut is just a doughnut, right?

A deliciously imaginative story about friendship—from Laurie Keller, the author / illustrator of The Scrambled States of America. At first glance, Arnie looks like an average doughnut―round, cakey, with a hole in the middle, iced and sprinkled. He was made by one of the best bakeries in town, and admittedly his sprinkles are candy-colored. Still, a doughnut is just a doughnut, right?Keller grew up in Muskegon, Michigan. After graduating high school, she took education classes at a local community college and studied dance until a friend brought her to see a show at the Kendall College of Art and Design, which re-sparked her interest, causing her to enroll and receive a degree from the college in illustration. WRONG! Not if Arnie has anything to say about it. And, for a doughnut, he sure seems to have an awful lot to say. Can Arnie change the fate of all doughnuts—or at least have a hand in his own future? Well, you'll just have to read this funny story and find out for yourself. This title has Common Core connections Keller has written and illustrated six books for Henry Holt Books for Young Readers: The Scrambled States of America, an American geography book; Open Wide: Tooth School Inside, a dental book about tooth care; Arnie the Doughnut, about an anthropomorphic doughnut; Grandpa Gazillion's Number Yard, a number book, Do Unto Otters, a book about manners; and The Scrambled States of America Talent Show, the follow-up to her 1998 debut.

Note: A copy of this book was provided to The Baby Bookworm by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.)When reading this book, I found myself to be very worried for Arnie. He is so sweet and naive, and it was heartbreaking when he found out that all doughnuts are usually eaten. However, the story becomes much happier once you realize Arnie is not going to be eaten, and even more so when he finds the perfect role as Mr. Bing's dog. This is part of my 365 Kids Books challenge. For an explanation see my review for 101 Amazing Facts about Australia You can see all the books on their own shelf. Stinky Thinking: The Big Book of Gross Games and Brain Teasers (Alan Katz) – Simon & Schuster, Inc. – 2005 This book could be used when discussing “problem and solution” of a book. It would also be a good book to use when teaching “author’s purpose” or doing a “character analysis”. A teacher could use it for a writing lesson when teaching “voice”. Students could write about another food item and have it take on human qualities. Students could speak from that food item’s point of view.
