It wasn't even that grisly in the detail - apart from the notable exception of the gentleman who's head turned and his tongue moved "as if trying to speak" for some time after it had been separated from the body. It's just him counting how much people he kills by year, the crime they've commited and the punishment. I had recently finished reading “The Faithful Executioner” about Meister Franz Schmidt and was intrigued to find that his diary was available for general consumption as well. A Hangmans Diary is not only a collection of detailed writings by Schmidt about his work, but also an account of criminal procedure in Germany during the Middle Ages.so this is every death that passed through the criminal justice system of nuremberg from 1573 to 1617. If you’re interested in medieval justice, the essay is invaluable, explaining the various people who worked at the prison, what a cell looked like, the various punishments meted out and for what crimes.

However, it is an interesting first hand account of the latter medieval Europe and the the chaos that it existed in.This was the obituary in which learning and high-minded pursuits went on while this story of criminal justice could have been t into effect on anybody unlucky enough to have acquired a bad reputation, although some of the crimes were absolutely appalling too. Absolutely incredible book, the book starts with an explanation of the legal system in Nuremberg at the time giving lots of context for the later entries. John Ellis was Britain's executioner for 23 years, and in his time he hanged some of the most infamous murderers of all time.

Various accounts report, "that guards had to tie her to a small wooden chair before drawing the noose around her neck", and that "she was hanged in a bosun's chair". The woman Dörfflerin, when she brought forth her child in the garden behind the Fort, left it lying alive in the snow so that it froze to death. First he shot a horse-soldier; secondly he cut open a pregnant woman alive, in whom was a dead child; thirdly he again cut open a pregnant woman in whom was a female child; fourthly he once more cut open a pregnant woman in whom were two male children. I was glad that I had read “The Faithful Executioner” prior to this; it provided some of the extra background information that Franz Schmidt himself did not feel necessary to record. It will help to be in a certain mood to read this book, as it is non-fiction, and does go on at length about crimes and their respective execution.

Did have a few good parts such as the explanation for the execution methods but that is about it for me. The Meister Schmidt was an interesting person, and the fact that as an executioner, kept a diary of all of the various tortures, executions, crimes, and other various tidbits of life at this time is fascinating! The diary is a bit frustrating in that you’re never given motivations for the crimes, and in some places I dearly wanted to know more of what went on.
