Miller and Morath's first child, Rebecca, was born in September 1962. The couple's second child Daniel was born in 1966 with Down syndrome and was institutionalized shortly after his birth. A short marriage to an Englishman brought separation from Magnum and a move to London. I continued to write stories but found to my amazement that suddenly now that I was no longer accompanied by photographers the world around me seemed to be filled with things that wanted to be photographed. I had finally discovered my own way to express what interested or obsessed me in a way with which I could live. After the war I had often suffered from the fact that my native language, German, was for most of the world the language of the enemy, and although I was able to write stories in English or French it did not touch the roots. After studying languages in Berlin, she became a translator, then a journalist and the Austrian editor for Heute, an Information Service Branch publication based in Munich. All her life Morath would remain a prolific diarist and letter-writer, retaining a dual gift for words and pictures that made her unusual among her colleagues.Tamara Merino is a documentary photographer and visual storyteller based in Chile, whose work focuses on human and socio-cultural issues and identity, all of which intersect in her documentation of subterranean communities. The Foundation served as a public resource for the international community of scholars and curators, as well as general audiences interested in Morath’s work, and supported work in three program areas: Grants and Awards; Educational Programs; and Traveling Exhibitions. Originally from the Midwest, Alex has been based in Yemen for several years working as an emergency nurse while pursuing her in-depth photography project, Once a Nation. She says: A special focus of the IM Foundation was setupto research the key projects and stories of each stage of Inge Morath’s career. Like many of her colleagues, Morath used her frequent magazine assignments as springboards for what she referred to as her “personal work.” Much of this work, having been published in the 1950s and ’60s, remains out of print and little known. Working closely with Magnum Photos and the publisher Steidl, since 2007 the Foundation has released three major publications and related exhibitions. Combining photographs with archival materials and scholarly texts, each considering a different aspect of her prodigious work, these and other projects in progress represent a full-scale reappraisal of Morath’s contributions to the field of photography.

Retrieved 27 June 2023.After re-locating to the United States, during the 1960s and 1970s Morath worked closer to home, raising a family with Miller and working with him on several projects. Their first collaboration was the book In Russia (1969), which, together with Chinese Encounters (1979), described their travels and meetings in the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. In the Country, published in 1977, was an intimate look at their immediate surroundings. For both Miller, who had lived much of his life in New York City, and Morath, who had come to the US from Europe, the Connecticut countryside offered a fresh encounter with America. One Awardee and up to two finalists are selected by a jury composed of Magnum photographers and the Executive Director and staff of the Magnum Foundation and the Inge Morath Estate.
