About this deal

When preparing the pancake batter, you should heat the milk so that it is lukewarm. If you didn't do this, then the melted butter would not mix well with it but would curdle into fine lumps.

NY Times bestselling author. 10 cookbooks. Mom of 8 kids. Homeschooling mom for 22 years. Addicted to Hallmark Christmas Movies. Bourbon Apple Pandowdy is baked right in an iron skillet which gives it a nice texture and a comforting, welcome-home kind of presentation. It's absolutely addictive. Hi there, I’m Petra, a self-taught home cook and a Czech mom of two teen boys with more than 20 years of cooking experience. I am here to share traditional recipes from the Czech Republic, a small country in the very heart of Europe. These dried apple rings are incredibly simple to make and will keep for months in an airtight container. If you have more apples than you know what to do with (and need a break from crumbles, chutneys, jellies and juicing) try some of these instead. Turn them into a decadent dessert by serving them with a cinnamon honey sauce that I often make when having gingerbread french toast. Fried apples are ideally served warm, but they can also be enjoyed at room temperature. For those with a sweet tooth, I recommend dusting them with powdered sugar before serving, especially if you used tart apples!

I also loved the simplicity of this tasty little treat – fried apples dipped in batter, deep fried, then coated in cinnamon and sugar… that’s it! Melt the butter either on the stove or in the microwave. Mix flour with baking powder. Heat the milk so that it is lukewarm but not hot. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, lukewarm milk, sugar, and salt. Stir in the flour mixture with the baking powder. Finally, whisk in the melted butter and let the smooth batter stand for 10 minutes. Add the prepared apples and spices and simmer briefly. Remove from heat and let the apples soak in the syrup for as long as possible.

I like making these in the fall because the apples are in season but it’s not a rule! No matter when you make them, they will taste amazing. Dip each ring in the batter, insert your fork inside the hole and let it drip a bit before putting it in hot oil. I use a frying pan/skillet for deep-frying these as they are thin and there is no need for wasting too much oil. Fill a large bowl with water, add a squeeze of lemon juice, and let the apple rings soak for 5 minutes to stop them discolouring. If you like, try adding a teaspoon of vanilla essence to your bowl of water along with the lemon juice – it adds a lovely subtle sweetness and smell to the fruit.
