About this deal

Increase chainsaw performance with a new chain. It’s the key component of your chainsaw. If you want your chainsaw to perform well and really cut through wood, you need to take care of it. When you buy a new saw chain the chains will be sharp and brand new. But eventually even the sharpest chainsaw chain will lose its edge, so it is important to maintain it and later on invest in a new one. Greenworks saw chains are extremely high quality made from the best quality steel. Saw chain tune-up tips I was very happy with how this machine performed. It neatly sliced through both large branches and small trunks, with the maximum diameter it could handle being roughly 50cm (when you cut from both sides).

DeWalt DCM565N 18V Cordless XR Brushless Chainsaw 30cm is fitted with a Brushless Motor for improved power and run-time which boasts a chain speed of 7.68 metres per second. Because the speed is just under 8 metres per second you don't need a certificate to buy this machine. As mentioned, the tool-less chain tensioning is a big plus, although all of the six cordless chainsaws that I tested have been designed with this feature. Just like the others, this one also has a claw stop, as well as ergonomic handles to improve the user experience. To get to the bottom of the best cordless chainsaw, I tested a variety of chainsaws, both from the most renowned and lesser-known manufacturers. I assessed each chainsaw on its assembly ease, design, performance, power, ease of use, safety, and value for money. Here is how I tested: They’re very lightweight when compared to petrol chainsaws – this not only makes them easier to move around to different parts of your garden, but also gives you more manoeuvrability if you need to take your chainsaw up a ladder or a tree There are a few design elements to this battery powered chainsaw that immediately stand out. Firstly, its size – with a 20cm bar and a very compact body, it’s the smallest of the six cordless chainsaws that I reviewed. Next up, the metal protective cap over the tip of the chainsaw. It’s there to reduce vibration, give you a cleaner cut when pruning trees, and prevent you from cutting with the nose of the chainsaw. Why? Because that requires expertise, whereas this chainsaw is designed for beginners. In terms of performance, this chainsaw did pretty well. The maximum diameter of wood that it can cope with is around 35cm (when you cut from both sides), but the smaller you go, the better the chainsaw performs.

This bit of chainsaw spec is easy enough to get your head around. Guide bar length simply refers to the length of the bar that the chainsaw utilises in its cutting action. The longer the bar you’re working with, the larger the piece of wood you can hope to cut. Cordless chainsaw motors come in different sizes. It goes without saying that the larger the motor, the more powerful your chainsaw will be. The downside to a large motor is that this will detract from your battery’s runtime. I found this chainsaw to be extremely easy to use for a couple of reasons. Firstly – its weight. At around 3.5kg , even with the battery in, this chainsaw is exceptionally light, which makes it so convenient to manoeuvre. I was able to climb into huge piles of debris and use the chainsaw in very awkward angles, which allowed me to get the job done so much faster. When it came to performance, this machine both impressed and disappointed me. It was great with smaller branches but not so great with larger tree trunks, to the point where the motor cut out a few times because I kept getting frustrated and unintentionally put too much pressure on it. It also has quite a slow cutting speed of just 4.3 m/s . Again, this isn’t really noticeable when you’re cutting smaller pieces of wood, but it makes things more tedious when you’re working with larger limbs. The Greenworks GD24CS30 chainsaw offers total convenience, with no petrol or electric cables to deal with. Instead, simply insert the advanced 24V battery and you are ready to cut. As part of the Greenworks 24V family, the battery can be used in a range of different Greenworks tools, from lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers and even power tools. BenefitsThis machine is also a great size. Its 30cm bar makes it very versatile, while the body itself is relatively compact. It’s easy to get a firm grip on the handles, and the minimal vibration makes things more comfortable. Even with a battery installed, this compact chainsaw won’t feel too cumbersome in your hands, weighing in at just 3 kilograms in total. The compact design isn’t just about reducing the bulk in your hands, either. With its low profile and sleek shape, it’s an altogether more ergonomic choice that allows for maximum manoeuvrability when carrying out pruning and less intensive cutting jobs. What’s more, there’s a stabilising tip protector as standard, with gripping teeth to ensure easy commencement of cutting tasks. This last feature is particularly handy if you intend to put this to use pruning greenery, with the gripping teeth ensuring a cleaner cut and minimising damage of surrounding branches and stems.

As we found when we reviewed six of the top cordless chainsaw models available, battery runtime greatly varies between models, even if you’re using the same sized battery. The difference can be pretty significant – a 5aH battery could give you 15 minutes of runtime with one model, yet 45 minutes with another. Like any power tool running on battery power, a cordless chainsaw grants the user much greater levels of flexibility when it comes to working environment. Most jobs that call for a heavy-duty chainsaw will be carried out in exterior settings, which often don’t provide easy access to mains power. As such, the freedom a cordless chainsaw provides is very appealing. The Limitations of Going Cordless Convenience – you don’t need to worry about mixing up petrol, or about electric cables getting in the way, when you use a cordless chainsaw That’s right, I said batteries – plural. This 36V battery powered chainsaw has been designed to run on two 18V batteries . This gives it a chunkier look and feel than those that hold just one battery. It boasts a few other thoughtful design features too, from its claw stop to its oil level indicator to its handy on/off button. Its cutting bar is 30cm in length, which is on the higher end of the scale for cordless chainsaws. Although they may be smaller and lighter than their petrol alternatives, cordless chainsaws still have the potential to cause just as much damage should an accident occur. As a result, you need to take safety very seriously. To cut branches under 30 cm in diameter, look for a chainsaw with a cutting bar length of 15 – 20 cm and a cutting speed of 4 m/s . 18 V of power will generally be well suited to light-to-medium tasks. Makita is famed for being one of the best power tool brands around and, after testing many of their cordless tools, I can see why. So, while I had high hopes for their DUC353Z Twin 18V Cordless Chainsaw, I was also a little doubtful about whether or not it would be up to the task that I had in mind for it – helping me to slice up the several mature trees that Storm Arwen had scattered around my farm. Both batteries have their own LED level indicators, ensuring you never need to worry about getting caught short with a rundown battery. Finally, there’s a metal spike bumper that ensures a firm grip on the workpiece you’re dealing with, delivering you greater levels of control and producing better cutting results. Torque Boost Mode: Power amplifiers increase performance at the push of a button for particularly difficult requirements Value for Money: I compared each model’s design, performance, power, safety and ease of assembly and use against its price point. Chainsaws that offered a lot of features, excellent performance, and easy usage while remaining affordable were deemed the best value for money.
