In principle, I should have loved this – heck, I had hoped Angelmaker would be so good it would even feature on my top 10 this year. It's a little more like reading bon mots by a philosopher or humorist, and a little less like reading a single yarn from a fine storyteller. What Angelmaker most resembles, to my mind, is a vast and sprawling Neal Stephenson novel, the perfect companion piece for his Cryptonomicon. They have long ago settled between them that he is to be disturbed between three and nine only in the direst of emergencies or if there is steak.Most of those moments won’t be important but a handful will turn out to be pivotal, shattering even. The last time Katie saw him he was still struggling with addiction, and he stole money from her purse. Sometimes we even jump character midpage, and it began to feel like an elaborate house of cards that could take a spill at any moment. It’s belongs to wealthy retired philosophy professor Alan Hobbes who has been brutally murdered, the investigation led by DI Laurence Page.

All the leads point back to two old cases: the gruesome attack on teenager Christopher Shaw, and the despicable crimes of a notorious serial killer who, legend had it, could see the future. Its quite dense in prose and will sometimes take four pages to say what could be done in a couple of sentences or a paragraph. For over and above the clockwork bees, the automaton monks, the mad scientist, the Fu Manchu supervillain and the black-market army, Angelmaker turns out to be a very timely novel about belatedness.
