About this deal

The two biggest competitors to Contrast Paints are Army Painters Speed Paint and Vallejos XPress Color. Army Painter Speed Paint First things first, preparing the model. If you plan to one-coat a model, make sure you clean any seams, mold lines, or sprue tags because those will pop out hard when you use these paints. Once that’s done you’re gonna want to prime the miniature white. For details on how to prime, refer to our hobby 101 article on the topic . To find out which Speedpaints reactivate and which do not, I painted all of them on my trusty sheet of plasticard and let them dry for over 24 hours, to make sure that really all of the medium has evaporated. I’m using Spaceship Exterior Warpaint to paint over the left halves, and Corax White over the right halves, which are both very light greys. As you can see, no matter which Speedpaint I’m painting over, the paint reactivates and discolours my acrylic paint. Neither Warpaints or Citadel paints make a difference. It’s the highlight and shadow that gives your miniature contrast. That will make it look much better than a flat coat of paint. It reads as more “real”. Contrast paints are integral in the popular “SlapChop” painting method.

Learning how to use contrast paints is worth your time, and it’s not very difficult. Just understand it’s not one single method. Contrast paints are a tool. At this point the model’s almost done but I’m not quite happy with the definition on it mostly on the faces. So I decided to push the definition farther with a wash. That’s right you can wash down contrasts if you want to. You can brighten them up with layering and highlights too if you want to. No one can or will stop you. I use dark red wash like Army Painter Red Tone or Berserker Bloodshade, focusing on the crevices and creases on the face but also hitting the main body a bit. I was able to paint these test models, in around 3-4 minutes each, which means I should be able to repaint my Afrika Korps infantry in a single day using the following method:

What is Speedpaint 2.0?

The new Speedpaints are initially available in the Mega Paint Set 2.0, which contains 50 paints, out on April 22 in 2023. A complete set and metallic paint set are following soon thereafter. In Summer there will also be a new starter set, and a Most Wanted set, which will have all of the original 24 Speedpaints but with the new formula. This model was done using almost entirely one-coat paints outside the armor paneling. This used some advanced techniques like changing the base coat from white, glazing over contrasts, and thinning contrasts using medium Primer: A primer is a specific type of paint designed to bond well to the surface it’s applied to, and give a smooth surface. This provides a great base for future layers of paints. Primers are available in many colors. To come up with the 2.0 formula, The Army Painter collaborated with some well-known painters from the YouTube community. A brilliant approach to designing products in my opinion. Goobertown Hobbies, Dana Howl, and “Watch it paint it” were asked to provide their input, and even come up with a bunch of new colours themselves. Speedpaint 2.0 contains a more stable acrylic resin which forms a stronger bond. It is promised to no longer reactivate after a curing time of about 2 hours depending on the environment. Which means there should be a time window of at least 2 hours for blending and reactivation. Or shouldn’t it? Spoiler: yes but no.

Undercoat: A first layer of paint on the miniature. It can also apply to a primer, but it’s not necessarily a primer. Undercoats are simply an application of paint or primer that you intend to put another layer of paint on top of.To use these paints there are basically two options. First, you can prime something white, or do a Zenithal highlight as a base coat. If you go with the prime option, you can either go with the Matt White or Cadre Grey though the airbrush, OR just use the normal Army Painter white primer. And what about reactivation? I would say it’s similar to the regular Speedpaints. After 30 minutes the paint is very stable and can hardly be dissolved with water or wet paint, but Speedpaint Medium allows you to carefully remove the paint. My thoughts on metallic Speedpaints
