This textbook provides students a theoretical basis which can then be applied to the practical R and Python problems, providing the tools needed for real-world applications. I thought this was not entirely successful: the abstractions seem not to lead anywhere, unlike the algorithms that are always developed with an eye to applications. L. Clark Lay, are all distinguished mathematicians, and in 1989 they jointly received the Outstanding Alumnus award from their alma mater, Aurora University. The book gives frequent warnings that the material is most useful in theoretical questions, but it is included anyway.

And I can add that it's a very handy reference to breeze through when you need to brush up on basics for a more advanced course that relies on this stuff.

If you have some basic knowledge then this book is good for you to contribute your Matrix knowledge. On the other hand one thing I really liked is that it introduced (left and right) column and null spaces early, and the relation between their dimensions and the size of the matrix. Strang is more fun to read, too: Strang really loves linear algebra and it shows, while Lay is very dry (except for one isolated joke: a sight gag in the discussion of linear transformations involving a sheared sheep).The author then concludes the main section of the book with a chapter on orthogonality and the least squares method (6) that provides plenty of applications and then a closing chapter on symmetric matrices and quadratic forms that deals with constraint optimization and other applications (7). Like any proper courtship, the reader is led to learn about the equation's backgrounds, goals, and common activities before any intermingling takes place. Even if you're familiar with his video lectures, the book is worth reading as it tends to solidify the concepts.

Reviews of books are published occasionally as are conference reports that provide an historical record of major meetings on matrix theory and linear algebra. These exercises start from easy computations, such as computing determinants of matrices, to practical applications on simulated and empirical data sets with R so that students learn how to get started with R, along with computational examples in each section, and then students learn how to apply what they've learned to problems in applied sciences. As a founding member of the NSF-sponsored Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group, David Lay has been a leader in the current movement to modernize the linear algebra curriculum. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year.Despite the no-frills approach, it is still a long book and it covers everything that would normally be in an introductory course, and a lot that would not be. The applications cover many areas of science, business, and engineering, with a lot of dynamical systems examples. The mathematicians will probably dislike it due to its emphasis in applications and the lack of proofs.

I didn’t find the explanations particularly easy to follow (compared to a book that doesn’t necessarily want to be completely rigorous everywhere), so the only appeal that might have for some is that it lists a fair amount of applications. Lay is also co-author of several mathematics texts, including Introduction to Functional Analysis, with Angus E. Written by a true master of the subject and explained in a way that even non-mathematicans can understand. NOTE: This edition features the same content as the traditional text in a convenient, three-hole-punched, loose-leaf version.
