As the data underlying Family Court Statistics Quarterly (FCSQ) are extracted from a live administrative database, figures are subject to revision in future publications. For tables that use information from the FamilyMan or CCD systems, data are extracted for the full timeseries within each bulletin. Minimal changes (i.e. a handful of cases) may be observed in earlier years, whilst larger changes are seen in the most recent quarters as cases progress further through the system. Just over a fifth (21.5%) of all applications were made by local authorities in the North West of England, followed by 17.2% of applications from local authorities in London. Local authorities in the North East have made the fewest number of applications (3.5% of the total). This pattern of regional variation has broadly remained the same since July 2022. From 1964—and reflecting the increasing liberalisation of social mores of the time—the library began to liberalise its approach to works in the Private Case, revising the collection and moving items onto the general catalogue for general access, a process that was completed in 1983. There have been no new entries in the Private Case since 1990 and all new erotic or pornographic material is openly accessible and listed in the general catalogue. There is no restriction on access to the Private Case material, except for some items which are in a fragile condition. At its largest, the collection comprised some 4,000 works; as at 2023 about 2,500 volumes are still classified by the library as part of the Private Case. Following the publicity surrounding Baby P case [footnote 1], the number of children involved in public law applications made by local authorities jumped from around 20,000 in 2008 to almost 26,000 in 2009, and subsequently to 29,500 in 2011 (Table 2).
