About this deal

The midrange, while a little distant for my tastes, is done real nicely and is pleasant to listen to. these headphones definitely have their own fingerprint, and you can hear this very well if you use software like Sonarworks reference. It is firmly connected to the left-hand side of the headphones and runs via a robust spiral cable to the combined jack plug. On the other hand, I didn't care about some of the usual preferences such as portability, usability without amp, or sound leaking.

The build quality is sturdy, german quality, so it is definitely built to last you a lifetime - although some parts are still plastic, the base of the headphone is metal. Velour ear pads are included for mixing and mastering use, and leatherette ear pads are included for monitoring applications. It's funny that the original 1988 beyerdynamic DT990 copied the appearance of the then state-of-the-art Stax Lambda, and these DT 880 today vaguely copy the appearance of today's state-of-the-art Stax Omega. Amplification: These DT880’s are rated at 250 ohms, and are not designed to be power efficient or run by weak sources and hence need a dedicated headphone amplifier.

To my ears, they are pretty neutral - I don’t detect any exaggerations across the spectrum (at least none I find annoying). DT 880's: Open, more treble, wide, less bass (but still enough for my taste),balanced and realistic.

In this case, the slight potential increase in amplifier distortion is outweighed by being able to play the headphones loudly enough in the first place. The DT880 Pro 250 ohm is a semi-open circumaural head-phone which Beyerdynamic market for monitoring. Even though the impedance for these is lower than that of HD 650, this pair is a tad harder to drive, same as with DT 770 Pro and DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm versions.Let’s say a playback of 100 hours provides audible improvements, along with softening of earpads and a relaxed clamping force. The improved systems of the legendary DT 880 provide a high quality studio headphone with excellent analytical properties, especially for classical music. Due to DT880’s design, enthusiasts with moderate to large heads may not prefer the comfort in these. I know its sound is supposed to be a lot more neutral than the Bose - but to me it sounds very muddy and over emphasizes low mids and bass. I should say that this headphone is for professional critical listening and for very good tracks, maybe only flac.

The rear of the pads look identical, but I noticed the velour material goes farther back on the 880 pad before the seam. The HD25's were still very nice sounding, very clean, i think they convey what's really there nicely.

This resulted in more punch to the bass, which most of us would agree is not a strong point of these headphones. I can very much compare them to my stereo hifi system at home ( exposure 1010 and q acustics concept 20) in terms of detail, sound separation, although these headphones do seem to be analytical, no colour at all which is very good. My one regret with the DT880 is that the mids are not a little more to the front of the spectrum, and I would love to see them a little warmer. Then suddenly it has a change of environment, a change to open or closed backs that are sending soundwaves via the structure of the ear rather than inside the ear canal. A lightweight, open-ear design, circumaural headphone with folding headband and 90 degree, swivelling ear-cups.

If you listen to the classic DT 880 Pro in direct comparison, it is noticeable that the lower midrange and also the frequencies above it are more directly represented than in the Pro Black Edition, whose bass reproduction slightly overshadows certain areas. The higher frequencies are crystal-clear without being unpleasant and impress with a very smooth sound. Power Requirements - my DT880 Pro are 250ohm, and although they can be driven straight from my iPhone4 / iPod Touch 4 - they need volume at 90% to be listenable, and they are not really being driven to their potential.

Since no pressure is exerted on the outer ear, it’s possible to wear DT 880 Pros for hours on end without ears getting hot or uncomfortable. Bluesound Node 2i, Gungnir Multibit, Geek Pulse, Freya S, Emotiva A-150, Jot2, Vali2, og Fiio x5/e12, Fiio M11 Pro, Shanling M0, Triangle Borea Br03, Monitor Audio Bronze bx2, HD6xx, Sundara, Elex, Momentum on-ear, CAL! My Audio Technica ATH-AD700s have quite a lot less bass than these and their treble spike probably is to a similar extent, but higher up in the frequency range where it should be, if they have a treble spike. Squishy pads, front foam was disintegrated at this point so it was felt disc right against my ears here.
