About this deal

By July 2021, the manga had over 800,000 copies in circulation by July of the same year. [46] By March 2022, it had 1 million copies in circulation. [47] Naoya grapples with being a societal pariah and maintaining his polyamorous relationship. His character arc isn’t about growing to love his girlfriends more because he already loves Saki and Nagisa unconditionally by the time they become a thruple. His growth is about overcoming shame. This shame is an intentional jab at fans of the harem genre—the humiliation of how society views his love of multiple people as deplorable behavior. People judge him with words like “Cheater” and “Two-timer”. We love the fantasy of having numerous people fall in love with us because it’s satisfying. In reality, it could never happen. You would be ripped apart by society if your fantasies were actualized. Naoya goes to incredible lengths to protect the secrecy of his scandalous relationship; he nearly pays a million yen to keep the truth hidden. At school, he and Saki pretend to be in a monogamous relationship while poor Nagisa sits alone. She sacrifices having a normal love life to be with Naoya: she avoids the shame potentially brought upon her partners if the truth came out through being stealthy. One of the primary sources of shame is Milika. Upon graduating middle school, Rentarou Aijou manages to confess to the girl he loves. Unfortunately, he gets rejected, making it his 100th rejection in a row. Having experienced heartbreak after heartbreak, he goes to a matchmaking shrine and prays with the hope of finally getting a girlfriend in high school. Suddenly, the god of the shrine appears, promising Rentarou that he will meet one hundred soulmates in high school.

And I left Mirika left for a specific reason that I will get to in the next paragraph, without a doubt I’ll say she was my favourite, but definitely not from the start. The why is very easy to see, because she has a reason to be with Naoya that’s not as dumb as the other: because she already wanted to be his girlfriend. That’s it. She did it on a whim, and that honestly made me think of her as bad as the others, however as time passed, I was getting more endeared to her. I mean, isn’t this girl a bad person? She literally kidnapped the MC 2 times and drugged him once, this girl is crazy, but aside from that stuff, I noticed that whenever she went on a date with Naoya, it seemed like the moments were a bit less comical, in fact, those were maybe the only dates I could take seriously even before getting a fondness towards her. And at this point, I’m overselling her to you, because she is as dumb as the other characters too and has as much self-love as what you would expect from a girl in a harem series, but here’s the catch, after she actually fell in love with Naoya for actual reasons, she wanted to monopolize him, she wanted Naoya for herself, which is natural even in this kind of series, but when your competition are these other girls, then maybe being of a regular kind isn’t that bad. As a Slice of Life, there isn't much story to go around. Again, it's 4 girls being materialistic in conventional ways, talking about make up, clothes, boys, hooking up, how cute the other looks, etc. The school setting at least provides non-club activities like the festivals, field trips, vacations, so the setting often feels varied and there is a certain feel of a timeline in that regard. Da Vinci News (in Japanese). August 16, 2020. Archived from the original on August 19, 2020 . Retrieved January 19, 2021. I mean, when you have an MC like Naoya who is an idiot who won’t shut up nor stop saying anything no matter how dumb it is because he is so focused in doing anything that is going in his mind, it’s difficult to not find the MC annoying. Across the manga, he easily is the one that growths less, because his dumbness is what gets him through absolutely everything, well, that isn’t exactly true because to surpass one of his obstacles he spent a lot of time studying, but he didn’t get smarter with his decisions either way, he is straightforwardness itself. I mean, Naoya is definitely someone who will leave you something to think about him if you pay enough attention to the series, you will either admire his boldness, straightforwardness and his way of not thinking through anything, or you will dislike him exactly for those reasons, because he is just so dumb you can only stand him for so much. I mean, just take a look at how the series began, this guy apparently was asking the girl he has liked a bunch of times to be his girlfriend and eventually she accepts, we start at that point, then suddenly a second girl comes out of nowhere, tells him that she wants to be his girlfriend and what’s his best idea? To go to his girlfriend and ask her if he can date her too, he gets rightfully punched in the face for that but because of peer pressure Saki accepts. The animation isn't bad, but mostly fails to do more than ''Chibi'' form faces, rather than using the strength of animation as a tool to enhance and exaggerate the comedy.Out of the blue, a blue-haired first-year decides to ask MC out, in typical anime fashion. A girl whom this guy has no prior knowledge of just shoots her shot. Sure, she worked up the courage to confess for several months, but what would he know. He's content and attached to his first and only love. Mateo, Alex (April 20, 2021). "Girlfriend, Girlfriend' Anime Premieres on July 2". Anime News Network. Learning that Rentarō has never kissed a girl before, Hakari and Karane start trying to get Rentarō's first kiss. To be fair to both, Rentarō devises an elaborate game that will let him kiss them both without anybody knowing who got it first. They try it several times, but things keep going wrong. Rentarō attempts to surrender his first kiss to the lascivious Vice Principal, only for the girls to tell them the other should have it, and so the three agree to have a three-way kiss. For a supposed introvert, Mari easily became part of the group and changed her appearance without much thought and resistance. I wouldn't say that's how it is in my experience, but let's say Akko has very convincing charming techniques... which she doesn't, from her perspective, she seems just as introspective as Mari in her volumes. So in the end both feel homogenized cute girls, with Mari being the quieter of the two in conversation, until we switch to Akko's shoes and have the same deal...Meido is Hahari's maid, who follows her with the utmost devotion and loyalty. Meido will defend Hahari with her life if necessary, without any hesitation. She is loyal to the point that, when she also falls in love with Rentarou, she refuses to pursue him because Hahari is in love with him. However, when Hahari tells Meido to be honest with her feelings, Meido immediately changes her tune and asks Rentarou out. In any case, this anime is something you want to watch in this dry season, the same season with some Otome bs I dropped 65 years ago, some fanfic spin-off of ReLife and Sakurasou, and WEP 2.0. I have said what I have needed to say. Hopefully, this preview has convinced you to watch GF GF not as something along the lines of but as something to sit down and have a laugh at. The art is really nice in this show. I love the bright colour palette as well as the character designs. One of my favourites of the year both artistically and overall. The manga is filled with creative expressions and dialogues that add to the overall hilarity. The characters' facial expressions are exaggerated and often accompanied by comical sound effects, further emphasizing the humor of the situations. Cardine, Kyle (June 22, 2021). She feels guilty about falling in love again until Rentarou comforts her and assures her that there is nothing wrong with loving more than one person.

romance gets scarce development between the daily activities, which overshadow it. Near the end of every volume, you're reminded that this is supposed to be a romance between two people who are not used to it, yet are as close as they can be in terms of friendship. As he tags mention, it's better to approach this manga as a Slice of Life with romantic elements thrown in, rather than a Romance that takes its time. Most of my thoughts are unchanged. I am mostly just following up with the review to assure people that this is well worth it all the way to the end.

This rancid experience does come with its bright spots. Production-wise, Kanokano benefits from a rather pleasant job. It's baffling that such a travesty would follow an otherwise successful streak for Tezuka Productions, a studio fresh off works such as "Dororo" and 2020's phenomenal "Adachi to Shimamura." The latter show's chief director and head director bring the same quirky visual identity to Kanokano, with a comic-book aesthetic and pastel colors. The series is also capable of nailing comedic timing and visual jokes that embrace the absurdity on-screen. Voice actors are the liferaft for the sinking 'ship(s) of Kanokano. Lines are delivered (and often shouted) with the crazy conviction the script requires. These VAs absolutely sell their lines and do their utmost to elevate some incomprehensibly crap material. For all the garbage persistent throughout the series, Kanokano at least executes its ideas relatively well. But if you ask me, it's a bit like polishing a turd. The following chapters have appeared in the magazine but have yet to be reprinted in the volume/tankobon, as collected volumes are generally released every two or three months.
