About this deal

The problem with seeking a one lens solution for anything is it will always be a compromise at one end of the FL range, or the other. I have been blessed with a good copy of the 18-55, and that has pretty much assigned to my X-E3 as a general purpose zoom. However, on my X-T3 my daily, general purpose lens is the 16-55/2.8 It works for most situations including landscapes. If I want wider than 16mm I go to my 14/2.8. Perhaps one of these days I might buy the Zeiss Touit 12/2.8. The lens has a 9.5-inch minimum focusing distance. That’s about average for lenses at this focal length. It’s good enough to get some close-ups.

This is Fuji's best general-purpose ultrawide zoom. The 8-16mm is an exotic special-purpose lens for those with special needs; this 10-24mm is much more practical and more useful most of the time.

Summary

Personally, I like having the XF 10-24mm F4 OIS in my arsenal, but it’s the sort of lens I would only bring with me when I’m specifically going out to shoot subject matter that calls for it. I shot some real estate recently and it was perfect for that. In the original conclusion to this article, I figured it would be a staple in my travel bag. As it turns out, I might leave it behind on vacation now too. Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, are not a problem with the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR lens. Light Fall-off And let us not forget the OIS, the optical image stabilizer being a huge benefit for the many Fujifilm X Series cameras without IBIS. The XF 10-24mm is weather-resistant and the XF 14mm is not.

Above left: Fuji XF 16mm f1.4 at f4, above right: Fuji XF 10-24mm at 16mm f4. 100% crops from corner of JPEGs Distortion is invisible, at least as shot as JPGs on my Fuji X-T1, which for all I know is correcting it automatically. The Fuji 10-24mm ƒ/4 R OIS offers excellent results for sharpness across all its range of focal lengths, with a slight bias towards the wider angles, which is good, as it's probably the reason people will get this lens. If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same extreme magnification would be about 21 × 31" (1.7 × 2.6 feet or 50 × 80 cm).

If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 3" (7.5cm) wide on your phone, then the complete image printed at this same high magnification would be about 11 × 16" (0.9 × 1.3 feet or 25 × 40 cm).My X-S10 offers only ON or OFF for the Lens Modulation Optimizer, and I can't see any difference with it ON or OFF. The edges are soft. While that can add some character, if you are looking for an uber-sharp lens, this isn’t it.

All of the primes are serviceable on the X-E bodies. The XF 23mm F1.4 gets a little front-heavy and you can probably forget about one-handed use for long, but otherwise it’s ok. A Brief Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Handling InterludeWhat little pincushion distortion there is at most settings can be corrected for more critical use by plugging these figures into Photoshop's My second wide-angle lens currently is the XF 23mm f/1.4 R and that is the main reason I mention it here in this comparison. I have settled on two wide-angle lenses where you could argue the XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR could do both, and then some. What’s more, there doesn’t appear to be any level
