About this deal

This book tells the story through multiple different character POVs and gives some brilliant book recommendations along the way, prescribing reading as a form of therapy which I'm always on board with. Overall the feeling of being back in lockdown and if you suffered from separation from your family or a devastating loss then really this isn’t the book for you. Everything Stephanie Butland wrote about about that period was so relatable, even though the story was set in York - thank you. But the Kindle edition was available for just 99p, and we were just a few days away from flying to the UK. I rarely get emotional reading but this book is so beautifully poignant and touching, speaking if a time when the world stopped, how we all feared how it would end and did the best we could for ourselves and those we love, a gentle hug of a story.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Loved also that so many great books are mentioned and recommended, especially for specific needs, recovering from loss, and adding to wonderful events and hopes for the future. Although she’d never have chosen it, her dance with cancer has changed her life in many positive ways. There are lots of excellent book recommendations scattered around in there too - frankly, loads and my to be read list has increased greatly, which is always a bonus. It's filled with the recommendations that they provide - books for loneliness, books to scare you, books for being normal or books to travel somewhere new.

One day a letter arrives from George and Rosemary enclosing a cheque and asking them to send them books they can read aloud to each other. This beautifully written novel is a tribute to all independent booksellers who have always been creatively bringing readers and books together to comfort, educate, transform, escape, remember, hope, and dream. I had a little smile when Flowers for Mrs Harris by Paul Gallico was mentioned, as I’m currently listening to that on audiobook.

Others flit in and out of the book and we get to know their situations and the unique pressures facing each of them at that time. There was some uplifting takeaway from the book and I did enjoy all the prescriptions of books for each character I even wrote some down that I would like to try. The idea about the book pharmacy and using books to fill the void whether we’re in a pandemic or just feeling a little lost in the world. She knows he would do great things, but would also expect her to look after her readers, and so she suggests opening a book pharmacy!I come from Whitby and know York very well and there were countless mistakes regarding both places which really annoyed me and prevented me believing that’s where they were supposed to be. They have decided to set out on their last journey together, without ever leaving the bench at the bottom of their garden in Whitby. Everyone had differing experiences in the Covid pandemic, and their needs differed depending on their jobs/ home life/ security/ wants and desires. A cosy story about the joy of stories, not only the books that are recommended for people who ask but the lives of the different people who receive them.

It was heartbreaking to hear their stories, especially as I was pretty sure they would be based on true accounts. This is a time when, pre-vaccine, people who caught Covid were extremely ill, when NHS staff were exhausted, when other key workers such as supermarket workers and public transport staff daily put themselves at risk and when in general, most people were genuinely terrified.

There are quite a few issues covered, and it’s quite clever the way that they’re introduced via the ‘book pharmacy’. However this just left many underdeveloped characters, when she had written compelling main protagonists to begin with. At times there is humour although not as much as in the last book which is understandable given the serious nature of the times.

Though at times this was a bit real and hard to read about Covid pandemic times again, this was such a gorgeous read. However, the story thread of Rosemary and George as well as Loveday, Kelly and Maddison is weaved through the book as the main story arc. Great books recommended and the list at the end is great which means more to add to my tbr pile and some I already have. It also brought into sharp clarity the ease with which it is possible to put someone in danger, quite unintentionally, because of naivety on our part.
