About this deal

Yet this reception failed to appease Mrs Holtby, who promptly resigned from the East Riding County Council when the novel appeared, denouncing it as a "travesty". Winifred Holtby's masterpiece is a rich evocation of the lives and relationships of the characters of South Riding.

It is, therefore, as collectivist in conception as a novel can be: “We are all members one of another” might be its motto. It’s the sort of novel I wish I’d come across as a teenager, an inspirational read to stimulate the mind. I think that is no small feat — usually an author shows somebody initially in one way and gradually throughout the book they morph more and more into that persona. The most important work of Winifred Holtby, published posthumously, set in the fictional South Riding of Yorkshire. In the novel, Sarah before coming to South Riding had three major romantic relationships; one when she was very young in the war with the inevitable tragic ending when he died, one when she was a teacher in South Africa which ended for political reasons (she also left South Africa because of apartheid, and remember, this novel was finished in 1935), and one with a Labour mp who wanted her to give up her job and marry him and was shocked when she said she'd rather be his mistress instead. My knowledge of Scottish lit is woefully inadequate, so you might have to point me in the right direction here! She wished to prepare their minds, to train their bodies, and to inoculate their spirit with some of her own courage, optimism and unstaled delight. Beddows; the gentleman farmer, Robert Carne, and his troubled daughter, Midge; the bright but impoverished teenager, Lydia Holly; the hedonistic but devout preacher, Councillor Huggins.

Lydia Holly, the scholarship girl from the shacks, is the most brilliant student Sarah has ever taught, but when her mother's health fails, her education must be sacrificed - there is nobody else to care for the children. g the dynamic between tradition and progression; the need/desire for women to be more than wives and mothers; the hardships of rural life in the early 20th century…etc. Also worthy of a mention is Miss Sigglesthwaite, the hopelessly ineffective science teacher, a rather tragic creature who finds herself the object of ridicule at the hands of Midge Carne and her fellow classmates. Burton puts her trust in the power of collective action by local government to create a more beneficent "English landscape".By virtue of its focus on interesting, varied female characters--as well as interactions among them--it's one of the most feminist novels I've read, and indeed Sarah's feminism would need little updating for the 21st century.

In the case of Miss Sarah Barton, the Council’s action changed the entire shape and color of a life. Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. South Riding’s publication was completed with Vera Brittain’s intervention (her dear lifelong friend), overriding the concerns of Alice Holtby, Winifred’s mother. Completed just before she died, it shows Winifred Holtby at the full height of her remarkable powers and brings home even more forcibly how great a loss current literature has suffered'.South Riding is widely considered to be her masterpiece, so if you’re thinking of trying any of her books this is the one to go for! I’m hoping to watch the BBC mini series at some point, whenever it moves to the top of the rental list. In this context with Carne there is one piece of information, a marital rape, which the reader knows (eventually), but
