About this deal

The book is bound to be controversial but Babette has never taken the conventional path and her readers love her for her outrageous approach to little mentioned topics. Puberty being a particularly unsettling time, Babette Cole has made this the subject of the fifth title in her bestselling series of family dilemmas'. In a wacky follow-up to The Trouble with Mom, Dad is bored with his job and starts fiddling around with robots, much to Mom's consternation. The text which takes the form of a conversation between a small girl and her teddy bear is ingenious and funny -it is the behaviour of Mr and Mrs Hormone (wonderfully depicted) which is responsible for and plays havoc with both physical and emotional states of girls and boys between (roughly) the ages ofeight and eighteen. The illustrations are silly but show teenage girls and boys in their various stages of development in appropriate ways, and while Cole's occasionally gleeful depiction of naked bodies might raise a few adult eyebrows, children will be sure to laugh out loud.

While the process of puberty for a women is shown very negatively, the process of puberty for a boy is very different, with images of a smiling boy embracing the changes happening in his body. Although the illustrations of hormones as hairy, ugly monsters is a bit bizarre (though probably more true than we would like to admit), we really enjoyed this book. The watercolors are equally candid, and the gleeful depictions of naked bodies may raise adults' eyebrows but children will laugh out loud.
