About this deal

Drinks will be chilled in 30-45 minutes and will be kept cold for several hours, especially if kept in the shade. Nikka, a giant in the Japanese whisky industry, also offers a gin that features apples from Hokkaido and sansho pepper. Not only are Roku Gin’s ingredients of the highest quality, many are also uniquely Japanese and, therefore, best understood by Japanese artisans. The selection of botanicals is often a closely guarded secret, with each distillery having its own proprietary blend that delivers a complex, harmonious flavour profile.

Each botanical has been harvested at the peak of its season to extract the best flavour, and distilled to fully embody the blessings of nature. Whilst Japan is perhaps more well known today for its growing whisky market and more traditional Japanese sake, umeshu, and shochu bottles, gin in the island nation has a definitive oriental touch to it, with many distilleries using botanicals native to the region, including yuzu, sakura blossoms, green tea, and sansho pepper. Gins produced in the southern tropical regions of Okinawa combine the woodsy flavor of juniper with local fruits like shikuwasa and kabosu. These include sakura flower for spring, sencha and gyokuro tea for summer, sansho pepper for autumn and yuzu peel for winter. This may affect nutrition and allergen information therefore you should always check product labels and not rely solely on the information presented here. Shinjiro and his successors continued to work hard on building a deep knowledge of distilling alcohol. Each of the botanicals are distilled separately according to their features of botanicals so that their individual characteristics are maintained.

The production of Japanese gin benefits from the unique climate and the distinct four seasons that the country experiences – but it’s the use of botanicals that is perhaps most notable to the consumer.

Reflecting a broader societal emphasis on harmony with nature, many Japanese gin producers emphasise sustainable practices.

Since 2016, several other distilleries and even global spirits giants like Suntory and Nikka have joined the fun. Add to this a splash of sake distillate and you have a truly artisanal recipe, inspired by the Yonezawa family’s rich history of sake production. It is also a testament to Japan's cocktail culture, which is marked by precision and elegance, just like the spirits that grace the glasses. Delicately floral, perfectly balanced with the crisp refreshing tea flavours, I think this is my new favourite gin!

The rice paper-made label on the bottle is the classy touch for this bottle which is a must-have for all the gin lovers shelves. Gin in Japan is enjoyed in a variety of ways, from neat sips that allow the connoisseur to appreciate the spirit's nuances to being mixed in highballs or complex cocktails. Etsu Double Yuzu Gin is distilled at the Akita Distillery, in the Akita prefecture of Japan on Honshu Island. Sakura flower, Sakura leaf, Yuzu peel, Sencha tea (green tea), Gyokuro tea (refined green tea) and Sanshō pepper.

Relatively recent, Japanese gins are combining the traditional juniper to Asian herbs, spices and aromatics such as ginger, green tea, cherry blossom (sakura), Japanese citrus fruits such as yuzu or sansho pepper. Made using eleven carefully selected botanicals, the gin contrasts strong citrus flavours with a subtle spicy finish that still manages to be unlike anything made elsewhere in the world. You should also note that the picture images show only our serving suggestions of how to prepare your food - all table accessories and additional items and/or ingredients pictured with the product you are purchasing are not included. The Atelier features four distinct types of pot stills, and in a process unique to Roku, the botanicals are distilled separately according to each feature to extract the best flavor and maintain their individual characteristics. The easiest way to pair food with Japanese gin is to stick closely to the local cuisine when looking to match a meal with your drink. I also really like the look of the bottle in my drinks cabinet and it’s taken pride of place at the front :) I didn’t want to open the bottle but temptation gave in.
