THE PATH TO DISTANCE - The path to distance has evolved with the all-new TP5. In 2017, a movement began with the optimal spin and launch conditions provided by our 5-layer construction. Then we increased ball speed with the HFM Speed Layer and now we’ve added advanced aerodynamics with the Tour Flight Dimple Pattern. The TP5 remains the only five-piece ball on the market from a major manufacturer. While its competitors would no doubt dispute it, TaylorMade’s position is that more layers provide greater opportunity to tune spin performance throughout the bag.

The TP5X was the best performer of the three, which once again aligns with what TaylorMade says the technology should do. I saw a more piercing ball flight, even when hit higher into the wind, and overall, I had very few shots balloon up and lose distance. The As with other TaylorMade TP5-series balls, we noted multiple layer incursion issues (the outer layer effectively melting into the inner layer). While prevalent, none was significant enough for us to flag the ball as bad. That said, this continues to be an issue for TaylorMade and is certainly something we hope to see improved (if not resolved) in the future. The 2021 TP5 and TP5x offer complete tee-to-green performance thanks to TaylorMade’s proprietary five-layer construction. Both models deliver world-class distance off the tee, with the TP5 having a softer feel and more spin around the greens, while achieving fast ball speeds with a new reactive core that is larger than the prior generation. TOUR CONTROL & COMPLETE PERFORMANCE -TP5 is our softest and highest spinning Tour ball, with enhanced stopping power inside 100 yards. Fueled by a soft cast urethane cover, its increased greenside spin provides control and precision where it matters most: Closest to the pin. Balls in Box 1 were heavier than Boxes 2 and 3 and included a single ball over the USGA weight limit.It’s not unusual to find a few different shades of cores with TaylorMade. That’s not wholly uncommon across the industry and, in most cases, if it’s a real problem it will be reflected in the gauge measurements. The results of our consistency tests (below) are frustrating. On one hand, it’s reasonable to say the majority of the problems we encountered can be traced to a single box. On the other, all of the balls of a given model are supposed to be the same and, in this case, there’s a strong argument to be made that wasn’t the case with the TP5s we bought.

The 2019 model was white urethane with UV resistant yellow paint.With the irons, the Pro V1 had the edge in carry by a few yards with a 7-iron, probably because it spins less and therefore flies further. Both balls were carrying the same distance with the driver, but due to the lower driver spin and flatter flight the TP5 gained a few yards on total distance thanks to more roll from the shallower landing angle. Control From a cosmetic standpoint, there aren’t any noticeable difference between the Taylor TP5/TP5X and most other tour level balls. The dimple patterns, text, and numbering are all pretty standard. However, the box claims that these are “THE MOST COMPLETE TOUR BALL”. The 2021 pix’s visual technology has not changed, but the performance has been upgraded to match the all-new design of the TP5 with the Tour Flight Dimple Pattern and larger, more reactive core (TP5). While the TP5X is my ball of choice, my recommendation is to perform a similar review and determine which one best fits your game.
