About this deal

GPD is a Chinese tech company that primarily creates laptops and tablets. In the same way that Hard Kernel created the ODROID GO and the ODROID GO Advance, GPD used their computing wizardry to create a clamshell handheld with an Android operating system, the GPD XD Plus. The right controller section of the console can be snapped out and replaced. That’s the hook, essentially. At first glance, the GPD XP looks a lot like a mobile phone slotted into a snug fitting controller. The superfluous hole punch front facing camera certainly adds to that aesthetic, as does that crazy wide LCD. We know that the LCD is 6.81″, and looking at some phones with the same size screen it seems likely to be a 20:9 aspect ratio. Not all games machines make good emulation machines, and we already know that Android MOBA gamers are one of the target demographics for this handheld. For games such as those, having a wider screen is perhaps very beneficial, allowing a wider view of the action around you. The short version: The XP Plus is a more powerful version of the GPD XP. Whether that extra power is worth it, will be up for owners to decide. GPD XP Plus Release Date

The successor to GPD’s XD Plus has been a long time in the making. For a while there it seemed GPD had moved on to new pastures with their Windows based mini laptops and gaming devices. But here we are, the handheld once rumoured to be the XD2 has been officially announced, and will be known as the GPD XP. MODULARITY AND CONTROLS If the OS stays current and the gameplay smooth, then this will be an absolute beauty to play. The original XD Plus came with MT8176+PowerVR Hexa-core processor, 4GB RAM and 32Gb Storage, which twinned with the right OS would make for the kind of super-smooth play that dreams are made of. We think that we might see the RAM increased to 8GB as stated above if the info we have is true and the storage increased to at least 64GB for holding all of your favourite titles. Console EmulationNintendo: NES, Super Nintendo,Game Boy Advance, Game Boy, Game Boy Colour,N64,Nintendo DS, GameCube, Wii Well in 2022, GPD Is looking to continue its Android gaming handheld, the GPD XP series, with a new member added to the family, the GPD XP Plus. GPD XP Plus

With a faster and smoother operating system, online play will be perfect. Come on, GPD; this Android OS needs to be spot-on this time! Final Thoughts. . .So, when we received a secret tip-off about the GPD XD 2, it grabbed our attention and hooked us in like nerdy-trout. We’re big fans of the shape of the console and it emulates many games perfectly, giving retro gaming fans a chance to relive some of their favourite titles at home and on the go. But, having said that, there were and still are some major firmware issues, and the Android software the console uses is now way outdated. Along with the change in SoC, there will be some other minor improvements in the way of UFS 3.1 storage, faster charging and WiFi 6. It also looks to support video output via the USB-C port. A lot of the specs here are going to sound like another language for most. The long and short of it is it’s comparable with the AYN Odin, and in some departments, beats the Odin. That is a really weird choice to go with. The most common aspect ratios are 4:3 for the older systems, and 16:9 for the more recent retro consoles. Oh, and the Game Boy Advance with 3:2, because it’s Nintendo and we don’t question it.

Overall the level of emulation is very good on the GPD XP +. There are plenty of PlayStation 2 games to enjoy, and I think with Citra that may be an issue with that version of the emulator rather than performance of the GPD XP Plus. Don’t forget there are alternative emulators out there, some of which may work better than others for certain games. Android Games Performance The GPD XP is an Android-powered handheld gaming device featuring a 6.8 inch touchscreen display surrounded by came controllers – but the controller on the right side is modular, allowing you to swap out controls depending on the type of game you’re playing. Overall the GPD XP Plus is a great improvement over the original model in terms of performance. We saw from the benchmarks that there is around a 50-60% difference in single and multi-core performance. This gives us a much faster overall experience both in emulators and Android games. If you’re reading this breaking news article while walking across a train line or crossing a road, then find somewhere safe to sit and take a load off because the content of this story could change retro gaming forever! Moreso, ETA Prime on YouTube has shown the GPD XP Plus in action, and it can in fact run PSP (God of War at 3x resolution) and PS2 games. It doesn’t appear to be 100 percent perfect emulation, but then nothing is, but it looks like there’s enough compatibility there for the console to be able to claim it can run the aforementioned systems. Not bad, eh? GPD XP Plus Concerns With the upgraded processor, the GPD XP Plus now also features faster memory as well with 6GB of LPDDR4X 4266Mbps RAM and equipped with 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage, which promises more than 3 times the read and write speeds of UFS 2.1 on the previous generation.
